Maybe also because parents are more likely to be using their cars at peak times ferrying children to schools etc and with more cars on the road an accident is more likely?

I've heard that creating numerous pointless insurance threads can also increase your premium.

I'll check again in the morning and let you know if your theory holds water...🤣🤣🤣

Because insurers know that, according to their actuarial statistics, people with resident U16 children are in general at a higher risk of claiming.

Distractions in the car, "parental taxi" journeys, accidental damage, etc etc. There's a myriad of reasons why. You may not think they apply to your particular circumstances - but the insurer have no way of knowing whether that's real or just protestations that your little darlings are perfect... Sure, you have no claims history - and that's also taken into account in setting the premium.

    Exactly!

My wifes car was rear ended by someone at the weekend

lady got out, said sorry , she was distracted by her 3 kids in the back!!

This is a myth. Insurers do not rate on whether you have have children or not.

If anything it would make it better as you wouldn't want anything to happen to them while you're driving.

They will however take in to consideration if you have a 2nd vehicle and adding a person/child of driving age to your insurance for fronting etc.

So your saying they ask whether or not you have children but then ignore this information in their statistical calculations. What evidence do you have to support that statement?.

Do two dummy quotes, one saying you've no children U16 and one saying you have.If they take no notice it begs the question "why do they ask?"
  • They always ask if you have children (living with you) and you declare it
If it's shoves up your premium by what you state then I can understand why.
Grey area, what about us oldies who may do the school run each day for the grandkids, they don't ask such questions about that but we do act like a taxi service hence more at risk to distractions.

They don't have stats for that, so they don't want that information... yet.

About 15 years of being a car insurance underwriter :) people have even asked me "if i have kids will my premium go down" it's not a rated factor.

When I've been asked seemingly irrelevant questions by an insurer I've always assumed they want to sell me other types of insurance.
