Eon On-line gone down

I've been trying the best part of this evening to log onto my on-line account with Eon - without success. Usually, I have no problems.

Downdetector produces an odd result if I enter Eon in the search bar it links to DownDetector's Neverwinter games server status page.

Anybody know what's going on ?

    This morning (25/11/2019) I'm getting a full-page apology when I try and log-on -

(Sorry I can't post a link to this - Martin's House rules prevent new users from doing this, even on a house limited basis "To stop spammers clogging up the site" . . . yeah ! )

Notice that Eon's "PR B*n*na skin patrol" have got in early to counter any bad PR - really customer centric !

This message didn't appear until this morning and I've been unable to sign-in since yesterday - and I've been encouraged to go paperless.
Is this the action of an IT department in a modern 21st Century, 24/7 energy company . . . . . . Monday to Friday IT support ?

Eon are obviously not paying for proper It Support - so much of this nowadays, like Grenfell, corporate greed disguised as incompetence.

Ergen the German needs to pull his Weisswurt out of the sauerkraut.

As @ 17:24 seems to have been restored to full functionality as far as my account is concerned.
See if it holds up 'til end of the week when I'll be needing to use it again.

Criminal not to have IT staff to diagnose the problem and someone else to authorise the fix over the weekend - only opportunity during the week when hardworking customers have the spare time to pay bills/change tariff etc. How difficult/costly is it to have software engineers on VPN, starting at home, on an escalating duty standby roster ? - assuming that was the problem and not the smart meter installation obsessives in the marketing department.

For the record, contrary to the happy smiley TV advertising accounts, I don't need a smart meter. I've enough clutter and intermmitently unreliable electronic equipment in the house and, after 32 years of continuous single person occupation, a virtually unchanged electrical equipment configuration and patterns of domestic usuage (Cannabis farm not withstanding - (Joke)) and a disciplined approach to submission of self-recorded meter readings, its unlikely that a SM will give me anymore "Information and control" than I already know or can exercise in the pursuit of economy or give Eon any better payments cash flow - so, please back-off with pleas to take-up an SM, it is, as I understand, optional i.e. not compulsory to have an SM.

How do you know Eon have not had IT on staff all weekend? You don't.
Websites go down all the time for various reasons, there is no "99% uptime guarantee" or similar. If they go down when you want to use it, then you just have to come back later.

Fair point Mr Jones, but, perish the thought, that in today's economic environment , would it be unreasonable to suspect that somebody "Up-top" has been shaving costs for the sake of shareholder returns and a big tick in the management credibility book ?
And if its not out-of-hours software engineer cover that's being shaved, then its probably labour savings occasioned by the use of SMs.
I haven't encountered this type of failure of service with other on-line service providers that I use . . yet . . and this does include financial institutions. The only other institution that I've recently experienced with a similar level of poor software maintenance was the AA and , at the time, they were in the process of merging a ghastly multiplicity of 20-30 year old IT systems into something vaguely modern. That said, IMHO, it all reeks of under investment . . i.e."Der management" tacking a web interface onto a lumbering and creaking 30 year old mainframe database.
On balance, judging by the universality of the "Push" across service providers to get Smart meters adopted (Which of course, for all practical concerns, enable service providers to lose the labour cost of man-powered meter readers), I'd say, in retrospect, it was probably a bungled attempt to get me to say "Computer says "Yes"" to a smart meter.
  • I note that inputing "Eon" into the Downdetector search engine still is yielding the status page for the "NeverWinter" games site, which users also report is down. So maybe there's a third possible alternative cause of the system failure here - hackers.

    - I understand that the Eon on-line site experienced a similar loss-of-access for a lengthy period of time in the autumn of 2018.

It may also be because your search for "Eon" is returning you the result "DungEONs & Dragons NeverWinter" :rotfl:

To be honest SalveForOldSores, I think you're just moaning for the sake of moaning now. I hardly think a website is going offline just to "convince" a single customer to have a smart meter, I have no doubt it was a genuine problem.

Private business has always been about maximising profits and pleasing the shareholders whether you provide gas, electricity or moon dust. You might do better to raise your complaints towards Eon, not a web forum.

Hello SalveForOldSores and welcome to the Forums.

I'm sorry you've had difficulties with our website recently. We've had certain issues over the last few days that our IT Support teams have been working to sort out. We monitor the website all the time and have IT Support available outside of standard office hours, including weekends, as we try to keep downtime to a minimum.

You're right about smart meters. You don't have to have these if you don't want them. Please ignore our offers to fit them.

Sorry again our website wasn't available when you needed it SalveForOldSores.
