i dont want to fork out £10 on a sim card i dont need and then pay £? to keep it active. then have to find it, then have to remember to charge it so i can pay my council tax bill?
Would be so much easier just to switch your phone on instead of wasting your time changing banks

Argos have a collection of phones as part of Black Friday from 99p. You have to buy £10 of credit with it, but there you go:
    https://www.argos.co.uk/browse/technology/mobile-phones-and-accessories/pay-as-you-go-phones

That'll do the job for your online banking needs just to receive texts and/or phone calls. Just get a free PAYG SIM as the bundled one looks like it might only last 30 days when you activate it.

    .

Be aware that buying such a phone would likely mean you're tied into a network, so be careful that the network doesn't require regular minimum top-ups, and/or you'll need to check what tariff is set as default, you may be better to switch to an alternative tariff.

If you have a handset that can use EE and you have good EE network signal, Asda mobile is good, they have a minimum top up of £5 and their rates are quite reasonable.

  • thanks for your links but i am not looking for a sim card/phone. just a bank as Stuart_W noted with email auth.

on the flip side if any mobile companies are watching, you should set up a stall in banks or set a link up with the banks to offer free sim cards

Get a cheap internet dongle - they can be plugged into your computer and allow it to receive text messages.

Nationwide current account holders can do SCA with their debit card and a card reader.

Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank have the option to use a token, not sure if that is available to new customers.
