Mobile phone providers - Tesco Mobile vs Sky vs Three?

I'm currently with Tesco and have been for some time. I pay approximately £8.50 for 2GB of data. I'm out of contract and comparing prices it looks like I could get more data and pay less. However I'm wary about other providers' service. I'm a Sky TV/broadband user and they regularly change their prices. Is this the same for the mobile charges? Do Three change their prices as well during the contract? Any thing I should be wary about?

First make sure your phone is unlocked, probably is but best to look before you leap.

Next is there a good signal where you intend using phone? No point going to say 3 if you can't use it. You can get free SIMS online to check this

If you get a monthly SIM only contract then should a price hike, or better offer, appear you can move away quickly

Some have built in annual hike following the RPI

Phone will be unlocked. Just waiting for it to arrive.

I think I've narrowed it down to Tesco vs Sky. They both use O2's network and I have no issues with it.

Guess it boils down to service.

My only concern is whether Sky might increase their prices at a later date.

If you have a Tesco clubcard you can redeem vouchers at double their face value on Tesco mobile. . If you are a big shopper at Tesco it will work out as a free phone service
  • According to Kens tech tips (https://kenstechtips.com/index.php/mid-contract-price-rises) Sky Mobile reserve the right to increase their prices mid contract but if they do then you can cancel without charges. Tesco claim not to increase their prices mid contract

I'm currently with Tesco and yes, that is the contract I'm considering against Sky's 3GB, unlimited calls and texts for £6 per month.
  • Beware of being stuck in a long SIM only contract, they used to be 12 months max, some are now 24. That’s a long time if you “find a better deal”, as you can’t just move without paying off the months outstanding (usually less vat).

Also, check the T&Cs very carefully, in particular with regard to exceeding your monthly allowance. Some charge an arm and a leg for “out of bundle” use, particularly mobile data (it’s better to have it slow down or stop). Many networks have difficult to find/read T&Cs... don’t rely on shop staff, it needs to be in writing.
