My personal experience flying with many different airlines. It has never been in a single occasion I ever see they do not check the travel document to match the ticket, they always do that on the departure gate.
I think they might get into trouble with authority if they don't do that. Passengers will also need to be worried if an airlines skip this process, as a terrorist could be boarding using someone else name.
I flew from Hong Kong to Gatwick on Friday. Before security I passed through a double-gate. I scanned my passport at the first gate, and in order to pass through the second gate scanned my boarding pass whilst a camera checked my likeness against my passport. I think that is the first time I've experienced a Passport check prior to security although I honestly cannot remember what checks occurred at Osaka Kansai airport a few hours prior.
There was also a check at the Departure gate although I expect that is mostly intended to prevent people boarding the wrong aircraft, potential terrorists hopefully having been screened out at security.0
