Electric Blinds

Options
I have just taken delivery of some Somfy electric blinds, after checking everything over I noted that the blinds have been supplied with Somfy motors that are discontinued, and have been for some time.

As the blinds where over £1000 which I suppose you could class as a luxury item I am quite annoyed that the motors inside are not from the current Somfy range.

The motors supplied are the Junior RU 30 RTS and the newer model is the Jr Roll up 30 WF RTS. On the companies website it simply refers to “The Somfy Junior” which is what I took to be the latest model of that product.

Maybe I am making a mountain out of a mole hill but do I have any rights in requesting the current range of motors and not these discontinued ones?

Why would you want to? Electrical goods nowadays are generally recognised to be inferior to those in the past.

send them back and order from somewhere that has the newer motors, you might have to pay more for this.

Is there a known issue with the older motors?

Are the newer motors interchangeable with the older ones?

No known issues as far as I am aware and yes the motors are interchangeable.

Then what's the problem? If you get a motor failure in the future (whether in warranty or not) then there's a direct replacement available.

What a stupid reply :rotfl: So your saying the latest version of electrical items are inferior to any previous :rotfl:

Why is that stupid? It's certainly possible. I suggest that there are normally two reasons a company might update their components. One being quality, the other being cost. These could fall into the latter category.

Have a look at typical lifespans of all sorts of electrical products. There is no universal "newer is better" trend.
  • How empty does your life have to be that you worry about the slight difference in motor model in your blinds (and know the part number)?

Exactly, Labsuper was saying the newer one is inferior simply because it was newer and was asking "why would you want to?" change to the newer one because they think its automatically worse.

So to assume its automatically worse would be silly which is the point I'm making. Also don't forget you can get updated components at a lower cost with improved quality due to a better design so it doesn't have to be one or the other.

But I would say the general trend over the years is an improvement in electrical products due to improvements in technology and design. We can make things much better and to a higher quality than 50 years ago. But what tends to happen is people will not consider the fact that the price has also come down so you need to find a similar equivalent to compare too.

That is often the case. When I was growing up in the 50s we had an Electrolux vacuum cleaner, very popular in those days. When my mother died in the 80s we cleared out her house and the Electrolux was still there, still working.

These days I have bought a number of cleaners, they are nowhere near as good, even the reputable brands.

Things like toasters and irons used to last for many years because if they went wrong, you got them fixed. Those days are long gone. You buy something cheap, it may last a very few years then you throw it away and start again.

It’s a sad indictment of modern life
