Bought car from small trader- How to register purchase?

Hi.

Last couple of cars I have bought I have only been given the V5C/2 part of the V5C document.

This time round I notice the dealer has given me the whole V5C document (except for Section V5C/3) which has been removed, so I assume the dealer keeps/sends off? The V5C/2 is still in tact & not completed.

I sorted out tax & insurance upon purchase, but not sure what to do with the V5C I have.

Any advice please? Thanks

  • during daytime hours goto https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle and full it in as if you were selling the car , do not enter his email address , but enter yours when asked (new owner) , you use the long number on front of v5

you will get an email saying you have bought the car , and new v5 will follow within a few days

...when you say you "sorted tax"...?

You used the docref off the V5C/2 and explicitly stated "I'm the new keeper", right?

I used my phone, googled 'tax new car' got taken to a gov.uk link, tapped in a long reference number, paid online, got confirmation that my car is now taxed.

That's my definition of 'sorted tax'

But where did you get that "long reference number" from?

If you used the wrong one, then you taxed it as the previous keeper - not a new one - and the keeper change is about to give the previous keeper all bar a month's worth of your tax money back and leave the car untaxed.

OK, I may have made a mistake there - how can I resolve this?

Edit: I followed the instructions step by step, and took the info off the V5C/2 - so I think I did it properly for a new owner

You're going to need to speak to DVLA.

Did you make it absolutely clear to DVLA to confirm that the tax is applied in your name?
