I'll try calling the council based on advise given on here, the postive ones!!

I'll keep you updated, hopefully might help others in this situation.

No , not to help with homeless

It is done to manipulate social housing and for revenue generation.

It deflects from the real issues regarding homelessness and first time buyers.

Are there any other privately-owned belongings you think the State should be taxing more for owners daring to use them in a perfectly legal way that the State doesn't agree with?

Perhaps double road tax for anyone having the audacity to cycle to work while leaving their car parked up on the drive for a whole year? Or double the TV licence fee for anyone who prefers Netflix and doesn't watch any BBC TV for a year?

The notion that this has anything to do with homelessness is pie in the sky, it's purely for revenue generation.

Cigarettes, alcohol, high-emission cars, aeroplane tickets...

Look, it's long been established that taxation can be and is used to dissuade certain behaviours.

And does it work in any of those cases or 99% of the time does it just increase revenue for the State? :)

  • I would just tell them your 'friend' Tom jones moved into the property on date X
How is it right you get charged more for an empty property than one that has 1 person in it

    It's not unusual.

Don't forget that two occupants paying 100% of CT between them pay less per head than 1 person paying 75% on their own.

That's one way to potentially end up with a conviction for fraud.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

As one example, alcohol sales in Scotland have fallen to their lowest recorded level since minimum pricing was introduced (and doesn't directly result in increased revenue for the state).
