TUI conversion insurance

Hi everyone

We recently went on holiday and needed to get some dollars. Exchange rates didn’t seem To be too different across different places and it was left a bit last minute, so we got them from tui. They also offered a £3.99 cover that meant they would buy the dollars back at the same rate so you don’t lose out massively, which seemed like a good idea

However having just gone back to exchange them, they now say that this offer only covers you for the first £200 of currency. This isn’t stated anywhere, other than at the very bottom of the receipt which you don’t get until after youve purchased the cover - and the receipt is in the envelope with the currency!

The bureau du change lady mentioned nothing of the cap on it, and just stated that you can cover your purchase to sell it back at the same price. We’re now a good £80 out of pocket and the woman and the shop are refusing to budge

This surely cant be right? Can you help at all?

Thanks

This would seem to be a case of an important detail hidden away in the T & Cs, something that is not allowed. As always, the first step is a formal written complaint to head office

I suspect (but I would check with someone more knowledgeable) that TUI's currency exchange business is regulated as a financial business, in which case a complaint to the Ombudsman might be an option.

You're only £80 out of pocket as you chose to take TUIs price for your US $.

Buying cash before travel is for last century.
  • £80 out of pocket compared to what?
  • £80 out of pocket by using the beat conversion rate we could find to convert the $ back to pounds compared to what we should have got by having the same buy back rate

We also took out more than we initially planned to on the understanding that we wouldn’t lose out converting it back

They should have told you about that when you purchased it.
It is mentioned online but obviously you did this in store. Even online it says for terms and conditions ask in store so it seems they failed to mention it.

Have you tried speaking to a manager of the store or calling TUI about it?

To be honest I doubt they will do much about it as they will probably just claim they told you even if they didn't so could be your word against theirs.
