    I've got volume at max
    I don't have a speaker icon as such (to equalise/ balance speakers on the taskbar
    There are no speakers on the monitor and no watts info on the info plate on the back of the monitor I can see

    If you don't have a speaker icon what did you click on earlier?
    If the speakers are not on the monitor, then you must have a small speaker inside the computer itself.
    If you type "sound settings" in the Start menu, what is the volume that is showing there?
    Any chance you can take a couple of screenshots?

    Yes it is speakers (I hadn't spotted that bit)
    typing "sound settings" in the Start menu tells me input and output volumes are maximum
