There's a big bump on the way with the Model 3 refresh although the popularity of the Y will mitigate some of that. The refresh will hopefully give the 3 a boost & lower production costs going forward.

I can't help but think that Tesla have scored an own goal with the RHD / LHD thing. I'm also puzzled as to why there isn't legislation against selling new LHD cars for use in the UK. Surely it's dangerous?

And BYD smashed it too, in fact they had an absolute monster of a first half, this year. Maybe 2023 is going to be OK after all.

BYD Smashes Sales Records In First Half Of 2023

Tesla had a great second quarter, producing 479,700 cars and delivering 466,140. Both are records for the company, but they are not records for the plugin vehicle industry. That distinction goes to BYD, which sold 703,561 new energy vehicles in the second quarter — 700,244 of which were passenger cars.
There is much speculation about who will be able to compete with Tesla. GM, Ford, Stellantis, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Honda, and Volkswagen Group are all making the proper noises about pushing the electric car transition forward. Yet, all of those companies are still saddled with the task of making conventional cars to pay for the changeover.

BYD has cast off its ICE baggage and is 100% committed to making cars with motors instead of engines. Being free to pursue its goals without the drag of keeping an internal combustion division afloat may be just the ticket for keeping up with Tesla.

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

Shame BYD number headline is always for cars with a plug rather than just bevs.

Yes, the Chinese NEV classification (new energy vehicles, that includes PHEV's) confuses matters a bit, but at least BYD has ended ICE only production. They are certainly one to watch, though sales in Europe are currently disappointing, but a potential monster.

Bit of British BEV bus news, with an update on the 100 double deckers for Manchester. Not a particularly 'fun' article, but has a good breakdown, and lots of technical details for anyone interested.

Sheffield Gets Its First Electric Buses, & 100 Electric Double-Deckers Ordered For Greater Manchester

In some exciting electric bus news from the United Kingdom, four electric BYD–Alexander Dennis Enviro200EV single deck buses will be the first zero-emission buses in Sheffield, reducing emissions inside the city’s Clean Air Zone, which launched earlier this year.
In more exciting news, last month Alexander Dennis handed over the first 5 of 100 electric double decker buses ordered by Transport for Greater Manchester to the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Rivian's response to Tesla's Q2 sales v's traget, is an apparent 'hold my beer', as they beat analyst expectations by over 25%. Certainly on target for 50k sales this year.

Rivian (RIVN) shatters Q2 delivery estimates, stock pops over 13%

As it ramps production, EV maker Rivian (RIVN) continues beating expectations in a critical year. In the second quarter, Rivian delivered 12,640 EVs, exceeding expectations and putting it on track to reach its 50K production goal. Rivian’s stock surged on the news, up over 13%.

Nice BEV figures for June in the UK. PEV's are at about ~25%, so hopefully the monthly figures can still reach my (arbitrary) 'nice' target of 10% x year of decade, in the later months of this year.

Interesting comment by the SMMT accompanying the June figures:

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations, meanwhile, grew again, with the segment up 39.4% as 31,700 buyers chose to get behind the wheel of a zero emission car – 17.9% of the total market. It is business and fleets, however, rather than private buyers, that continue to drive this growth, thanks to the attractive fiscal incentives on offer. Although manufacturers are offering a range of BEV deals for private buyers, including flexible subscription models and attractive finance rates, more could be done by other stakeholders to make purchasing even more compelling.
