UK car sales for Mch, and BEV's are up nearly 80% (YoY). Tesla(s) tops the chart for most popular model (of any car type) for the month. Great to see BEV's making the news (hopefully) again.

    Car Registrations

Been refreshing the smmt page since yesterday and yet still seen it here first!

Sales well down on last year which obviously means strong prices and even more squeeze on the second hand market - plus Tesla must be capturing an important share of all the money spent....could it be of order £1bn Tesla sales in the UK this year already?!
    I think....

The slightly disappointing thing for me is that £1bn spent on £50k Teslas isn't actually that many BEVs.

15.5k Teslas sold YTD, around a quarter of all BEV sales and 3.7% of the overall UK market.

Edit: Total figure for Tesla’s share is actually 3.8% so a few MSs and MXs were sold as well.
Interestingly the difference between Tesla 2022 YTD and 2012 YTD is pretty much all accounted for by the MY (7.7k of the 8.3k).

Drivers May Not Care About Fuel Efficiency, But Investors Should

Stephen Wilmot, writing in the Wall Street Journal, argues that, generally speaking, more efficient EVs cost less to manufacture, and thus should deliver higher margins.

Fun stat from the Mch UK registrations, is that it beat the BEV sales total for the whole of 2019.

Also mentions that some predictions are that BEV sales could become the most popular 'fuel type' by 2025. Assuming petrol and diesel (and HEV's and PHEV's) are all treated separately, then that seems likely. But if they mean BEV's being the majority of sales, I do think that's possible but would rely on total sales remaining low, as I doubt BEV supply can reach those levels otherwise. Clearly, hard to predict anything at the moment with so many factors, such as Covid, Ukraine, Osborne Effect, chip shortage etc, that could be impacting supply and demand.

    Fun times ahead.

Britons buy more electric cars in March than in whole of 2019

British drivers bought more electric cars in March alone than in the whole of 2019 even as the broader market slumped, according to figures that underline the accelerating pace of the UK’s transition away from internal combustion engines.

There were 39,315 new battery electric vehicle registrations during the month, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), a lobby group. In 2019 there were 37,850 electric sales.

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

Well yes and no. Let’s try and make this a little more nuanced.

    [A BIG SNIP]

So if you want to help the grid match demand to production it is better to charge overnight as @Nick1961 suggested and let the solar generated during the day meet time critical demand.

I might have used a different adjective for the long bit I cut out. As it happens, like many I charge by solar and at night. It's still not obvious what you are trying to achieve on this thread and what conclusions should be drawn.

Why on the EV thread? Last Saturday it was nice and sunny and I thought of plugging in the car but ended up doing some washing. Apologies if my usage of my own power caused a more expensive use of gas somewhere down the line.

Most people here understand that the high cost of electricity at the moment is very much based on the most expensive marginal fuel, which is currently gas. Anybody who has ever used the Agile time of use tariff will also be aware of marginal costs. Some people even have apps to show when grid usage is low and try and tailor usage to those times.

But your arguments on here don't serve to illuminate or inform anybody. I think irritate would be more appropriate.

I couldn’t agree more except perhaps the last paragraph 😉

Can't explain why, but this article simply tickled me, perhaps it's because it's such a silly 'record', or because the photo shows a whole building length of chargers. Vive la difference.

Tesla opens its ‘longest’ Supercharger station in the world

We've often filled up with diesel and croissants there: a handy stop just off the A6. The chargers are open to other brands too, so there's still hope of a few croissants next time..
