UK’s Largest Commercial EV Order Yet — British Gas Orders 2,000 Electric Vans

As the electric vehicle transition speeds up, you see higher EV market share, more EV charging station deployment, and bigger EV fleet orders. In that vein, we’ve got news this week of the UK’s largest commercial EV order to date. British Gas, the largest energy and home services company in the UK, claims to have just set the new record (fittingly) with an order for 2,000 electric vans.

Even better, the company (or parent company Centrica, to be technical) has put one in the middle of a field for a photo shoot.

Joking aside, this is a big step forward, yet it’s also just the beginning of a fairly fast sprint for British Gas/Centrica. The company has a fleet of 12,000 vehicles, and it intends to have every single one of its vehicles electric by 2025 (less than 4 years from now or nearly 5 years from now, depending on which end of the year they’re talking about). Highlighting how quickly things are changing, the original plan was to do this by 2030.

The initial 2,000 electric vans are all Vauxhall Vivaro-e vans, giving Vauxhall a nice boost in hitting its fleet efficiency/CO2 emissions requirements.

In addition to the 2,000 electric vans, Centrica will roll 1,500 electric cars into its company fleet at approximately the same time.

All of this tags onto an order of 1,000 electric vans last year.

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

I think we've discussed BEV tractors before, and Countryfile and Fully Charged have done pieces. Here's an article (US based) on a couple of tractors, which cost more to buy, but are cheaper to run, and easier on the driver and wildlife/farmstock.
One even has a swappable battery option, which probably goes perfectly with farm buildings and PV.

You Can Now Reserve An Electric Tractor From Solectrac For $1000

“Both tractors are built to outperform their diesel counterparts by eliminating exhaust and noise and with the benefit of instant torque at low RPM.  Solectrac tractors accommodate existing implements and are perfectly suited for farm and utility operations, as well as in livestock and equestrian environments where noise is an important consideration. Additionally, the low noise level and absence of exhaust makes electric tractors desirable in any environment by improving workers’ health and safety.

“Solectrac’s electric tractors can be charged either from the utility grid or from renewable energy, like solar and wind. Electricity is cheaper than diesel fuel and Solectrac tractors only have one moving part in the motor. Consequently, maintenance and fuel cost over the lifetime of the electric tractor is estimated to be one-third that of a diesel tractor. Using solar or wind energy in the charging infrastructure completely eliminates fossil fuel inputs thereby reducing the users’ carbon footprint and helping meet climate goals.”

In 2104 BG ordered 100 ENV200s from Nissan - some suggestions they were little used:

Some graphs in this article are fun to see, especially the way that PEV's have taken off in the last few years. It also notes that whilst China is still ticking along and doing OK, countries like the UK (and France, Germany etc) have suddenly leapt passed them in annual % sales. Nothing linear about this anymore.

Electric Vehicle Market Share Trends In UK, Netherlands, Norway, China, Germany, France, Sweden

One of our readers this week requested that we publish plugin vehicle market share comparisons for half a dozen or so countries on the bottom of each EV sales report. I loved the idea and we will do it going forward. However, that also made me realize that I could now publish an updated full-year report comparing the plugin vehicle share in several major countries. Here that is in several different chart formats.

Carmakers left in the dust as tech giants join EV race

Foxconn’s announcement that it is set to start manufacturing 250,000 electric vehicles per year on behalf of Fisker, a Los Angeles-based rival to Tesla, must have had car industry executives spluttering into their cornflakes last week.

The truth is that conventional carmakers are now in mortal danger as the industry spins rapidly out of their control – potentially merging with the electronics industry and into the lap of companies with no background in carmaking at all.

Foxconn is not alone, after all. China’s Huawei, Apple, Amazon and a string of other tech companies are eyeing up the prizes presented by the twin shift to EV and autonomous or semi-autonomous driving systems – where their expertise in software engineering and managing data flows puts them at a big advantage.
