Following rapidly on from announcing location of the new Giga factory Britishvolt appoint their new CSO. Can't wait to see this up and running.

Britishvolt appoints new CSO to support gigaplant ambitions

Battery manufacturer Britishvolt has appointed a new chief strategy officer as it continues to work towards the UK’s first gigafactory.

Isobel Sheldon has been appointed both chief strategy officer and head of the Advisory Board, joining the company from the government-backed UK Battery Industrialisation Centre where she held the position of director of business development.

“I take great pride in having grown over time with this nascent industry, which is now of global strategic significance as the world transitions to electrification and green technologies, having learnt some hard lessons through trial and error to spot the industry’s pitfalls and opportunities,” Sheldon said on her appointment.

I'm old enough to remember when the words 'green flash' meant trainers (or 'daps' in Wales):

Zero emission cars to get green number plates to bypass congestion charge

Drivers of zero-emission cars are to be given green number plates which could make them eligible to by-pass congestion zone charges or secure cheaper parking. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said they will be available from autumn and would help ‘show people that a greener transport future is within our grasp’. The move is designed to make switching to electric vehicles more appealing as the government looks to meet its target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

So if I buy a roll of green insulating tape, and put a strip down the side of my number plates, then I can drive my diesel car in London for free?  They use ANPR to check who gets in for free.  The green stripe is just a gimmick.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Also Tesla will include the value of emission credits sold to FCA in the gross profit.

In Q1 2020 regulatory credits accounted for 27% of Tesla’s automotive gross profit.

Which is strangely never accounted for in internet calculations of how much damage to the environment each Tesla makes.

I’d never thought of it like that but effectively Tesla is saying “if you give us lots of money we can facilitate you making dirty cars without penalty”.

Which is the same as FCA paying a fine to the EU (or whoever gets the money) and the EU giving the money to Tesla.

Which is true, and is doing exactly what the EU wanted. Making it more expensive to build polluting cars and supporting companies that build greener ones.

FCA have been very opposed to EVs in the past, but are now looking at them to reduce and stop payments to Tesla.

So they're funding increased EV production at Tesla and pushing FCA to do the same. A perfect policy.

I can see your logic but the EU are effectively sending the money out of Europe whereas if they collected the fines in Europe they could reinvest them specifically in green policies and incentives in Europe. Also looking ahead if Tesla expand production (as they are doing In China and US as well as new planned production in Europe) they will be able to sell more regulatory credits and thus allow FCA to produce more dirty cars in Europe.

I doubt that that subsidising US and Chinese production was exactly what the EU had in mind when they introduced the 95g policy.

Are we going to see other Chinese EV manufacturers jumping on this bandwagon as well?

Despite saying I would never sell my Merc convertible, it has gone and the drive to an all electric household continues. (It was all very sudden - I called on a friend yesterday who was looking for a convertible for his wife’s 60th birthday).

I did however look wistfully at the dashboard when I dropped it off and saw that with 60 miles already driven the range was still showing as 684 miles. I wonder when that will happen with an EV.

What to replace it with? Does anyone make a convertible EV?

Ok, so we don’t like YouTube videos but despite this one sounding like it has been produced by a Tesla fanboy it does make several important points about Tesla design some of which will also apply to other EVs. Obviously the lack of a great big cast engine block facilitates the design of a better front crash structure (more friendly to pedestrians as well as vehicle occupants) but what I hadn’t previously realised is the extent to which the battery contributes to the overall strength of the body structure. The low down weight of the battery also assists in the prevention of roll over incidents.

Now you don’t need to watch the video.
