Orange Sim on Virgin Tarrif

Options
I have lost my Orange sim card that was on the Virgin tarrif. Orange want to charge £15 +VAT to replace sim.

However as Orange no longer offer the same tarrif to new customers, Is it worth paying the charge to remain on the Vigin tarrif?

Are there any benefits to staying on above tarrif?

Any advice would be appreciated?
Titch :)

  • How often do you use the phone?

The OVP for virgin gives you free line rental but you cant get free/subsidised phones - so the maths all depends on your usage, desire for the latest phone and your coverage.

    For me...

I'm an ideal candidate for PAYG because I have months where my bill is only £5, but I like the OVP/Virgin setup because I dont like topping up and being on contract makes it simpler when I'm away on holiday, I can go to more places simply because its a contract.
I dont text and those that I contact dont need pictures etc.

So I dont need the latest phone, I dont have to chase around to top up, free texts dont give me anything and the contract part means I dont have to wory about running out of credit.

Not a yes or no answer but but everyone is different

Thanks, are you able to dial 0800 numbers free using the OVP?

0800/0500 are now charged at the standard rate on OVP Virgin

The tariff is pretty good in that there are a hell of a lot more Orange customers than there are Virgin customers - therefore in many ways it is better value to be on the OVP Virgin tariff than on the Virgin network itself!

I would also agree with what pinkkipper said ;)

While OVP virgin is a good tariff, remember that if you use the phone abroad you get charged Orange roaming rates. Virgin roaming rates are actually better. Also Virgin offer 3p texts to other Virgin users, this is not offered by OVP virgin.

Just a note to MoneySavers who are connected to the OVP Virgin Plan.

If you are calling cross network ie Orange to say Vodafone or T-Mobile then dial the access number
0871 208 1050 which is charged at 15p for the first 5 mins and then 5p per min for the rest of the day.

When you dial this number you will hear a dial tone enabling you to enter a cross network number and be charged the cost of a standard rate call.

I've just had my bill in for September and have saved a fortune!!!

I agree with what pinkkipper said. Orange stopped new connections because it's so good!

The OVP Virgin tariff works out cheaper than Orange's similar PAYG tariff (Talk and Save) which is 25p for the first 3 mins and 5p thereafter. You actually pay 10p more a day. Calls to other networks are 35p on OVP Virgin vs 40p on PAYG. SMS is 10p on OVP Virgin vs 12p on PAYG.

The only thing that you can't get is text bundles.

Remember that if you leave it to get a subsidised phone you will not be able to get back on it, so it may be worth buying a phone outright. You could buy SIM free, but an Orange PAYG phone will also work and may well be cheaper, just put in your OVP Virgin SIM. ;)

I also have OVP Virgin and have been on it for years for the reasons you discuss - as I mainly use my phone for incoming calls it suits my needs. However, to keep up with the new phones (and not keen on paying for them!) I signed up last year for an offer on Carphonewarehouse for a mobile including 12 months line rental on T-mobile (750 mins off peak and 50 texts) - I didn't port my number as I am happy with Orange and have had this number for 10 years. I spent half of the year carrying 2 phones and the other half switching SIMS to use up the minutes ::).

I have just signed up for another new phone with free line rental (this time on Orange) and was not looking forward to the hassle again - I hadn't realised that I couldn't port o to o until I phoned and was told I couldn't do it. Searching for a solution, one option was porting to non-orange and back. However, I discovered yesterday on another thread that Orange do not charge for Orange to Orange call diverts using the Everyphone service (they do charge for other networks etc). A quick search on the internet found the following pages of interest:

    http://www.mobileshop.org/usertech/everyphone.htm

    http://www.mobiles.co.uk/everphon.htm

The second includes a comparison table.

According to discussions, this service is no longer offered to private customers but is for business - I cannot find any reference to it on the Orange website therefore if anyone knows any different, please post here (may mean it is another service that will either stop or be charged for in the future). I managed to set it up last night without a problem.

    Kind regards

    Mr B
