I may be old fashioned but I just don't want someone in Sri Lanka collecting documentation in a second language and different laws.
Thanks to colonialism, the English language (and legal system) aren't particularly "foreign" to Sri Lanka.

I checked the prices of online conveyancers on MoneySupermarket for a notional buy/sell transaction. The cheapest was £960 + VAT.

The solicitor whom I have dealt with for years charges £1100 + VAT. He is very quick and efficient. He works on his own, from home, so he deals with everything personally. What he doesn’t have is an online portal, where you can track progress. He just deals with everything by email.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Perhaps but my professional experience with outsourcing proved pretty quickly that 'nuanced' issues and arcane legal stuff was still simply lost in translation.

So, similar to the standards many here experience from the "onshore" conveyancing factories. :D

Seriously though, even the big corporate law firms are sending work to the Indian subcontinent - I doubt they'd be entrusting their multi-million transactions to them if they had concerns about the quality of work.
  • The excellent conveyancer I used, who at the time worked for a high street solicitor, now works for online portal MyHomeMove. His name is James Summerfield and I can highly recommend him.

I couldn't say personally but my gut would agree :D

The example which sealed it for me:

'This lady lost her husband last week so sensitivity required'

'Dear lady, I believe you have lost your husband. Good luck with finding him.'

My experience is in a large PLC and I would have to say cost trumps quality sadly.
  • I bought & sold recently, my vendor used a solicitors and I used a solicitors. My buyer used a conveyancing house (Convey Law) and my buyer's buyer used a conveyancing house (DC Law).

Our chain nearly collapsed on a number of occasions because of Convey Law & DC Law and the 'tick-box, cannot do anything in parallel' way they operated. They undoubtedly added several weeks delay onto what should have been a simple purchase.

Please, save yourself and the rest of the chain a headache and pick a good'un!

Interesting that they charge a fair bit more than the solicitor I go to. (This is for an example transaction.)
