What to do

My Dad died suddenly yesterday..... I'm at a loss, total loss of what to do WRT everything....

His death has been referred to the coroner since he dies 12 hours after some minor surgery....The internet says I have to register his death within 5 days but how do I do this if he's with the coroner awaiting a post mortem...?

Never mind where to start with his pensions and so on.

    Sorry for your loss...

Don't worry about the registration, the five days is not an issue - the coroner's staff will speak to you and let you know when that can be done.

Don't rush into anything else - it can all wait.

I cannot really help but I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you have people to help you.

All I can offer is that there is a book, a Which? guide, called 'What to do when someone dies' which seems to cover all aspects.

    It is available on Amazon

I am sure someone will be along with more practical advice soon. I wish you the strength to get through this time

    My sympathies.

I believe the leaflet 'What to do when someone dies' is free, and may be obtained from a registry office or a funeral director.

The leaflet is available to download, but was withdrawn in 2015 and replaced with information pages on the .gov website.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss - definitely don't worry about the 5 days - that is quite an old rule and often people can't get appointments etc, everything will happen in time

The key contact at the moment would be the Coroner's Officer who tends to have oversight of all cases and paperwork etc - I have dealt with several in the day job and they seem to be organised and helpful.

Much of the issues to do with pensions etc will become clear when you register the death and the registrar will offer the "tell us once" service - means lots of people get told quickly - can be handy to collect together any info like NI number / passport / driving licence / info about state and public sector pensions etc etc as they can use that at the time.

Thanks guys.....it's made more difficult that he's survived by my mother, but all the bills etc are in his name.... Is it generally easy to swap them?

Did he live with his mother? If you want to change the bills to her name etc then contact utility companies etc and ask to speak to the bereavement department - sometimes there is a special number or advice eg here

    or
    https://www.stwater.co.uk/help-and-contact/faqs/my-partner-family-member-has-passed-away-what-do-i-need-to-do/

google the company's name and bereavement.

But TBH this can all wait - I know you feel that "you must do something" but there really is no hurry

Are they being paid from a sole account in his name or from a joint account?

You can ask the coroner for an 'interim' death certificate if there's likely to be a delay. Most companies will accept this - the LGPS certainly does.
