Engagement ring “lost by courier” any legal people here?

So, I have the most beautiful and sentimental wedding and engagement which I safely posted via Royal Mail, back to its maker for a clean, rhodium plate and service. All done, email confirmed and couriered back to me via UPS......well, that’s it! Never seen again! uPS attempted delivery 1 Nov 19 but I missed the door (evidence of the driver at my ring doorbell).
I called UPS call centre as there are no UK numbers anywhere! They advise delivery would be Monday.......nothing......Tuesday......nothing.....
So now they are under investigation.
I am completely distraught and devastated by this and have literally hit rock bottom.
Blue Nile (who cleaned them) have offered replacements for the value of the lost one now, (investigations end Mon 18th Nov 19).

This doesn’t even cut it, surely I can take this further, police? Legal advice? Compensation?
Nothing can replace sentiment, rings blessed, the proposal, all just a memory which are now tarred.

Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

Well it took Hermes two full months to locate my missing parcel, so I'd say give UPS at least until the end of their investigation period. What do Blue Nile say in their Ts&Cs about lost items?

As you say, nothing can replace sentiment; so I'm not sure what you expect.

I am sorry but life is too short to stress so much over what is essentially a piece of metal.

People matter more than things, something I have learned the hard way.

Get your compensation, have a new ring made, it will still represent what it is meant for.
  • Thought I would just ask here first before going down a legal route.
  • That’s true enough but still not easy to deal with right now.
  • 5 grand worth of metal and it’s not about the money, if it were 5 quid I would be gutted.

What crime are you going to report?
    Compensation?
They've offered you a replacement of equivalent value. That's your compensation.

Why do you need to "go down a legal route"? The jeweller has agreed to replace your ring.

Jweller has said the items will be replaced up to their value, I really don't know what else you expect here.

yes it is horribly upsetting to lose something of such sentimental value, but they can't compensate you for that - and you say yourself it isn't about the money at all, would giving you an extra £50 for instance (not that you can force the jeweller to) would that make it easier to lose a sentimental item, I suspect not.

As the jeweller sent the items back the contract with courier is between them and not you, your contract is with the jeweller alone.

By all means keep on at the courier, assuming they will talk to you as they are not obliged to, but I can't see what else you can hope for here unless the rings are found of course after they have completed their investigation.

I wouldn't bother. You are essentially entitled to a refund (and not even a full refund) or a replacement, which you appear to be getting. As you've stated you can't put a price on sentiment and you won't get this either.

Wait for the UPS investigation and hopefully they'll turn up. If they don't then I'd only consider legal action if you don't get anything back.
