I did think it was not possible to open a basic bank account if you already hold an existing current account but maybe I am wrong....

I don't think the account was frozen pending proof of source for AML etc. if it was from HMRC. More likely it's a suspected tax fraud, given the fact that the funds were put in a fresh basic account, after checkered past dealing with HMRC. The whole story is quite confusing, years of no SATR submissions and fines, then somehow a tax rebate instead of hefty bill.

Only Santander can give you information on when the funds might be unfrozen. Did they ask yo for any information/details? The wait could be 4-6 weeks, so I wouldn't count on having access to the funds any time soon if I were you.
  • I think the last post is correct they are checking for that as they have requested the self assesment details which I have now sent over. If it was just a simple check then it would of been completed by now I would imagine. Thing is this went through HMRC'S security checks for weeks also so major pain in the kneck. I did kind of see this happening because it's a newish account. I was incorrect about the fine amount that stood at 4000 not 2000.

    You can.
If you fail to meet the critera for a full account. You will get a basic one. Even if you still hold other accounts.
Could be that the OP bank with overdraft has in effect withdrawn facilities and the agreement is to clear the debt via them, rather than being passed for debt collection.
