I think I misread the thread.. if we are talking specifically about lane closures for roadworks I agree that people should use all the available road and follow signs to merge etc.

For me the issue is not about roadworks but behaviour in general congestion.

I often have to queue on the nearside lane to exit the motorway on my way home.. there is often at least one or more drivers who will pass the queuing traffic and leave it to the last moment to force their way to leave the motorway. I don't see that this is anything to do with efficiency but is simply someone who doesn't want to queue being selfish.
There's nothing wrong with joining a lane late as long as it's safe. Forcing doesnt sound very safe though.

If the traffic is slow-moving in the lane you wish to join it is unlikely that there will be space for your vehicle to join.so the only option is to force your way in.. or wait for a space.

The thread isn't specifically about roadworks. It's about anywhere that you have two lanes merging into one, and why people tend to use only the left hand lane and not both lanes. It's not about pushing in, it's about using (or not using) the lanes provided on the road.

(Or rather, it's about drivers in the left-hand lane deliberately preventing drivers who are legitimately using the right-hand lane from merging).

I believe I am correct.. read the op:
"A rant about roadwork lane closures and those who "police" them!"

The thread was originally about lane closures.. it may have been hijacked by others into a discussion about all merging lanes.

I think most people would agree that lane merging should use all the road available and merge in turn- it just makes sense.
Where I have an issue is when people want to skip the queue in a single lane of traffic (not merging) and join at the end. IMHO this is just selfish driving.

Drivers can only do the latter if other drivers don't do the former.

Use both lanes and nobody can skip the queue as there will be two queues of more or less equal length.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

    This is how it's done...

Still the white van man got a bit upset and wouldn't let the driver merge in turn at the end.

So what? The fact that most drivers were queuing in the left lane meant this driver saved a massive amount of time compared to if both lanes had equal queues.

I'm quite happy most drivers seem to think you should queue in the left lane just because the right one in closing in half a mile. Saves me loads of time. I'm not going to whinge about one car (or van) not letting me merge at the end when I've just passed 30 or 40.

Yes, this is different, and cheeky, and a clear case of people not joining the queue they're meant to be in. Very different from the '2 lane wide' queuing we're talking about here.

You misunderstand me.. this is a motorway. The nearside lane of 4 lanes is slow-moving leading up to a junction where people are exiting the motorway. All other lanes are free-flowing. Most people will join the queue to leave at the junction but there is always a couple of cars that pass all the traffic and then force their way in at the last moment. I think this is just being selfish.. no one wants to queue.
