Energy: Find the cheapest supplier & earn cashback

  • After using all the comparison sites, I must express some disappointment.
Not only were most plans they showed not available direct from those sites thus nullifying any cashback deals, but many available plans were not even listed.
I eventually spotted a 2% fixed discount plan until 2010 for Southern Elec & Gas on Uswitch, not available direct, and not available through cashback sites, so I had to approach them direct. After reading everything thoroughly I applied for this plan. I met some reluctance from Southern initially as I am presently a customer with Atlantic who are part of the same group, but persistence paid off and I received their acceptance email on 3rd Sept..

Then on 12th Sept., I received an email from Ben Scammel at Pipeline saying they may be able to offer a discounted plan with an unnamed new partner and offering advice that directly conflicts with what Martin has said on this site.
    Quote:-
'Prices are sky high now so we think this offer represents much better value than some of the 'capped rate deals' currently being offered that can simply lock customers into higher rates long after prices have come down again - especially as the Government has pledged to make this happen.'

So I'm now not sure whether I've done the right thing and don't know what to do next. Should I cancel Southern? Will their exit fee apply as the 7day cooling off has passed? Are rates going to drop in the near future and will the discount still apply?
    Help!!
  • WARNING ref gas bills being charged at old higher rate instead of new lower rate. See below for info.
I have been with EDF for many years and have recently frequently found problems with calculations with my bills. If you do not look deep into your bill or calculate it yourself, YOU COULD BE PAYING TOO MUCH.
They usually forget to give me my Self Read Discount, also no kwhs given at lower rate, just all charged at higher rate. I seem to have to phone them everytime I get a bill.

I have just received my Sept gas bill and was dreading looking at it as it meant a lot of my time spending checking if discounts added, incorrect missing discounts from last bill added etc. A week after receiving it I checked it and thought GREAT, THEY HAVE GOT IT RIGHT THIS TIME. I then checked my elec bill and also checked what Iwas being charged per KWH ref. price increase.
This was correct so went back to my gas bill (which I prev. thought was correct) only to find that I had been charged a proportion at the new rate of 7.000 per khw (correct) and then the rest at the lower rate of 3.984 (incorrect) which was their OLD HIGH RATE - this should have been charged at 3.056 so overcharged.
They must be getting away with millions if people are not scrutinising their bills as I do or for those who can not calculate them theirselves.

Please do not ask me who the best company would be to join as I do not know myself.. I do calculations regularly but it seems that the discounts your current company give are not part of the calculation.

GOOD LUCK IN CHECKING YOUR BILL.

    Hope this helps
  • I'm already signed up for this, but no where on my online bills or BG website, can I find out the price per unit. Does anyone know them, as Swalec have persuaded me to change, & before it all goes through, I want to make sure I've made the right choice (as read on here that Essentials an't have a price hike until April 2009)

Send your examples to the regulator and let us know what he says?
    This is simply fraud.
You should be given compensation ordered by the regulator and the regulators findings should be published.

  • A few weeks ago we were advised in the weekly email to change supplier. Shortly after this Martin was on T.V. saying that British Gas (online tariff) and one other company still haven't put their prices up. When I checked today the British Gas tariff still shows as the cheapest.

Does anyone have any idea when all the prices will have gone up and when is a good time to switch.

    Thanks
  • Hi. I just went on MoneySupermarket which brought Ebico up as MUCH cheaper. But when I called them they did say that a price rise was imminenet so might be worth holding out before switching to them.

Does anyone else have Scottish Power discounted energy online NSC and found cheaper quotes elsewhere and left?! The only reason I ask is that this seems like such a good tarrif! :)
  • I've moved for the 5th time since buying a house, and every time I am under the impression that I am making the wrong choice. I left British Gas for Powergen, who had an appalling customers' service, then moved to Southern Electric (who were brilliant on customer's service, but a bit expensive) and got tricked into returning to British Gas. From British Gas (with whom I had to fight to be able to leave; I am still cringing when I hear their name!) I went to Npower which, in spite of the bad reports on Watchdog, I found were very decent (I never tried calling them, but all my e-mails sent via the Net were replied to promptly). Now I have just signed up to E-on (back to Powergen...), after giving a serious thought to the possibility of joining some 'green' company... Has anyone signed up with some green energy provider, and if so which one? What are they like?

hi guys, need some help with electricity and gas bills. we are 3 students living in a flat in SE1 3HS. our EFD electricity bill is ridiculous and comes to about £270 on average per quarter and last time it was over £300. our EDF gas bills are about £70 per quarter.

i have used most of the comparison sites but i am unsure about what i should do. the cheapest option available seems to be Click Energy 5 by british gas but the prices havent been raised for that yet and then the second option is Extra Saver 9 by E.On. Some people however are saying that these comparison sites have wrong prices.

i am confused about what i should do because we only need to live here for one year in this flat, so what do you guys think should we go to british gas or E.On or keep EFD? any help will be much appreciated. thanks
