    . . . Thanks for any insight.

It is likely that the "savings" you were quoted have assumed that you will go to E.on's default tariff from the end of your current contract. The savings quoted might apply if you do nothing.

What you really need to do is to compare the COSTS of the options available to you so that you can calculate any savings compared with the costs (i.e. bills) of the past year.

In my opinion, you are unlikely to really save anything if you stay with the big six at the end of your contract. With energy prices rising across the board recently, you'll be lucky if you get away with paying no more than last year.

    Edit
You can set up CEC to compare the costs with those of your existing tariff so that the savings estimated are more realistic.

    Edit2
For what its worth, the cheapest E.on tariff for me (using CEC comparison with my current tariff) would see my annual estimated dual fuel costs rise from £638 currently to £868 if I switched to E.on's Smart Saver 1 Year v5.

As Consumerist said, to really know if you are going to save, the best thing is to look at your bill find the unit rate (price per unit of elec or gas like comparing price of petrol per gallon at different petrol stations) and standing charge (once a day fee for the service doesn't change with how much you use) and then compare it like for like with other tariffs by finding the same info there. You may need to dig a little.

Comparing "like for like" isn't that simple, as it depends on your daily usage.
For example, use no gas in a day and the standing charge is significant, but use 500kWh of gas in a day and the standing charge is pretty insignificant. Comparison sites do all the work for you, and are very accurate for predicted costs, given your annual usage in kWh. Ignore any "savings" quoted, they are meaningless for most people.

Any tariff can be removed from the market at anytime.
The rule is if you see one you really want then apply immediately.
Some tariffs last a day or two as the energy companies only allow so many people to sign up. Then they close it and add a new tariff.
So it was too popular and has now been replaced.

Yes I've just spoken to E.On and put in a complaint and the only explanation they could give me was it was a "business decision". I said if they'd sent this blasted letter earlier (I understand now I could have done this 54 or 56 days or whatever it is before the contract expires) then I'd have got the V14. As I explained, I've been with them now about 18 years. Would have expected better. Will have to sign up for the V15 costing me £60 more and they wouldn't even refund that. Oh well you live and learn.
  • May I just also thank the rest of you for your input. Appreciated. To be honest I've not gone into it with a fine tooth comb as a couple of you have suggested - all rather complicated and reason I've not usually switched but I joined the Cheaper Energy Club as I figured it would be the best one to use giving a more balanced and accurate overview. The garage comparison of checking cost of fuel is a good one but I just don't have that much time but at least it's fixed for a year so if the current projections of electricity and gas being likely to rise are true, it will hopefully save me something or, at the very least, not cost me any more. Time will tell I guess. :)

Hi guys. I have a query please. I'm currently on duel fuel with E.on and I've been with them (not switched before!) for a LONG time - probably getting on for 18 years now. On Wednesday I received Martin's usual emails including information on the Cheap Energy Club so I went and joined right away and ran a projection and was informed that E.On's Go Online 1 year V14 would save me £220 a year: £195 a year plus £25 cashback. Great I thought. Friday 20th July (my contract expires on 31st August this year incidentally) I got a letter from E.On also recommending the same plan so here I am on Sunday (22nd July) back onto Cheaper Energy Club because you can only switch onto this plan via a price comparison site and as we all know, CEC is included BUT now for some odd reason, there's no sign of this plan - which is seemingly replaced by a Go Online 1 year V15 which only saves me £160 a year; £135 a year plus £25 cashback! So what gives and why is v14 no longer listed? In only 5 days it's going to cost me a further £80 just like that?! Even this website is yet to be updated because doing some reading still talks about v14! I'm really frustrated and confused over this. I tried calling E.On to ask them but they're not open on a Sunday so I thought I'd come on here and ask instead. Has the cheaper v14 disappeared or is CEC not showing it for some reason because on Wednesday, as I said (and I even have it written down!) the saving was £220 a year and now this v15 is 'only' saving me £160 a year. ARGH!!

    Thanks for any insight.

Hello Mancunian_Nick and I'm sorry you missed out on version 14 of our Go Online tariff.

Version 14 was available between 10 and 18 July 18. As gsmlnx says, we're reviewing our products all the time and often release/withdraw them relatively quickly. Sometimes the replacement will be more expensive, as here, and sometimes cheaper than its predecessor. It depends on the circumstances at the time. Tariffs offered on renewals are available at the time the letters are written.

With Fixed Tariffs, once you're inside the Price Protection window (open 49 calendar days before the tariff end date until 20 calendar days after), you can change supplier/tariff and keep on the cheaper prices whilst the switch goes through. If changing supplier, exit fees also don't apply when inside this window.

You can switch between any of our products at any time without picking up an exit fee not just when inside the Price Protection window. It's also possible to forward switch to another of our tariffs by up to 52 days in advance. Once locked in, you'll still be able to go on to this tariff even if it's withdrawn before your chosen start date.

The best way to keep an eye on what's available is through our website or the independent price comparison sites. As well as writing to customers, we also put information about tariffs on bills, statements and annual summaries.

Hope this gives a bit of an insight into how we look after renewals. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

  • Hi all,
Does anyone have any experience of Utility Warehouse please? I'm considering signing up with them but wondering if there are any problems/negatives I should be aware of....

By the forum rules, the only place to discuss Utility Warehouse is on the thread at https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2473547/utility-warehouse-telecom-plus-discussion

Please note it is the only company which has this special rule in all the MSE forums. Make of that what you may.
  • I'm due to update my gas and Electricity this month and so I've done some searching using the Cheap Energy Club, Moneysupermarket and Compare the Market. With all these search engines I'm not getting any EDF quotes returned. I'm currently with EDF and happy to remain there. Anyone know why I'm not seeing any offers? I do see quotes on EDFs web site, but last years renewal I got a better deal (with them) through MoneySuperMarket.

Perhaps because they are too expensive so appear further down the results?
On the Cheap Energy Club(CEC) you can tick the box "Tariffs from my current supplier" which shows just those tariffs.
For me EDF do show on the CEC but well down the list as they are 33% more expensive than my current tariffs.
