Does anyone ever check the contents of the MSE emails?

I've been looking for a cheaper energy supplier and regularly check to ensure we are on the cheapest. So when I received the latest email mailshot from MSE and read NPower were offering "Longest Fix: Npwer. 31 Dec 2017 £1,370" - I was tempted (and not for the first time I hasten to add)

How wrong can MSE information be?

My currently annual costs are £1,430. My online quote from the MSE link and through nPower was £617.78 a month - Annual cost: £7,413.41 per year!

    Give me a break.

I'm not now totally convinced Martin is no longer a "Money Saving Expert"

    Sorry.

    Where's the unsubscribe link..........

This looks as though there has been an error with your input consumption figures. Have you checked again to make sure the numbers are correct?

The figure of £1370 is for a customer with the average consumption. You clearly have a consumption higher than that. Even if you did have the average national consumption your results are likely to be different because of relatively small regional differences.

    Hi all,

I applied via the cheap energy club to switch our gas and electric to coop energy pioneer fixed 2015 on 6 Dec and haven't heard a thing since. Just before Xmas, I rang the coop using the number on their website but the person I spoke to said there was no record of a switch for our address. I was cut off before I could enquire further and wasn't able to get to speak to someone again despite waiting nearly half an hour in their queue! There is no other details on the cheap energy club site other than to say the switch is in progress (which hasn't been updated so assuming no movement!) I have had just one email to date from the cheap energy club dated 6 dec from a no reply address saying thanks for switching. There is no reference number or contact details in the email. Has anyone used this process and successfully switched through the cheap energy club?

Please would someone tell me where to go from here as we don't want to be waiting indefinitely and would rather cancel the process if it's not going to lead anywhere so that we can pursue other options but it doesn't say how to do this in the cheap energy club site! We have come off our fixed Scottish Power tariff so are now on their standard.

    Thanks.

Since you are having difficulty communicating with coop, maybe if the switch doesn't go through it's for the best? I'd contact your current provider (Scottish Power are usually very easy to communicate with) and ask them if they've had any notification, and if not assume that the switch never was actioned.
Others have reported failed switches using the Energy Club, but I've never tried to switch that way so have no direct knowledge of the process with them. The other comparison sites seem to have much more robust systems for switching, so I've always used them.

Yes, the usual procedure to cancel a switch is to notify the new supplier. Ask SP to object to the switch if they receive the request.

When I applied to switch to Co-op I was given a reference number at the end of their online application process but that was via the Co-op's own web-site (although it used the energyhelpline web-site for the application). Co-op do seem to be a bit slow, however. The follow-up acknowledgement email said I should receive a welcome pack within 21 days, after which there would be a 7-day cooling-off period. So up to a month before anything actually happens.

As you are probably aware, the Co-op's Fixed March 2013 has now been pulled and a Fixed July 2015 has been substituted at higher unit prices (averaging about 3.5% depending on your region).

I agree with momist that you should re-check your options again and then apply directly to the new supplier. There have been a number of reports on this site of Cheap Energy Club switches failing.

Thanks guys, that's very helpful. I contacted Scottish Power who confirmed there hasn't been a request from anyone to switch our account so guess it never went through. I went on uSwitch and a energyhelpline and coop are still coming out cheapest for our area by about £250 per year on their July 2015 fixed deal so I phoned them up directly again earlier this morning and got them to start the switch on the phone. They took my meter point references numbers and all details and are sending me a welcome pack through the post. My switchover date will be 6 Feb.

What's annoying is that I wasted all that time with the cheap energy club! Ah well, it's sorted now. Thank you again.

So does that mean CEC is out of business? I'm all set for switching and would prefer doing it through MSE's venture, however I need to be sure the switch will happen..

CEC is still in business but their switching operation has been criticised as being unreliable and their quotes inaccurate; it isn't clear whether the problem is with the moneysupermarket switching site used by CEC or incorrect data being entered by consumers.
