Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone could give us some much needed advice. My boyfriend and I are just moving into our first house, It is a new build so we need to install gas and electricity meters. When going on the switching comparison sites it asks for your current expenditure or usage figures. We have no idea how much electricity or gas we use monthly. We both work full time so would not be at home during the day much.
Would be very grateful for any input.
Thanks
These figures might help:
Gas
Number of bedrooms at your property/Avg. gas consumption (kWh)
1 10,000
2 15,000
3 25,000
4 29,000
5 or more
Add 2500 kWh per room
Electricity
Number of bedrooms at your property/Avg. electricity consumption (kWh)
1 2,500
2 4,000
3 5,500
4 6,000
5 or more
Add 250 kWh per room0 -
Hello everyone - A triumphant first post on MSE. I have just switched from npower to Scottish Power via Uswitch and MSE. Bad news no sign of free case of wine. Good news - £50 cashback for a dual fuel switch. Hurrah!0

That's interesting.
We've been in our house just over 12 months and I've just tallied up the consumption figures. We (2 adults, 1 child) have a 1920's 4 bed semi with 5 rooms downstairs (plus porch and hallway).
Totals are 17600 for Gas and 4678 for Electric.
I work from home 3 days a week.
Seems to me that we are pretty good with our usage.0 -

Or perhaps the figures are just totally misleading.
Likewise, we live in a 3 bed house (gas for heating & hot water, cooking all electric) and would be horrified to have consumption figures anywhere like those suggested. Ours are less than half the above suggested for a 3 bed property!
Ofgem say that average household consumption figures (which I guess is a 3 bed semi property) is 3300kWh electric and 20500 kWh gas.
Whatever the 'average' property, I don't see how it fits the above numbers. Electric would be a 1-2 bedroomed property whilst gas is based on a 2-3 bedroomed property using the above figures."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

I'm now horrified at our electricity consumption. There's two of us in a 3 bed house and we use almost 8000. Gas is only around 13500 so we seem on the low end of that but why on earth is our electricity so much higher than the norm I wonder? (Gas heating, hot water and stove, electric oven and so on)0 -

Is there any general feeling towards the two? One to avoid?
Suppose they are all the same, mind you
Purely personal experience but I was with Npower for a year and I'd not return to them unless they were an enormous amount cheaper than anyone else. I was then with EON for a year and have moved to get a cheaper tarif but would move back if/when they become cheapest again for me. Seems my experience tallies with the statistics on customer service ratings of the two.0 -
Does anyone know the best supplier to go to with Economy 10?0

Your current one.
Attempts to change supplier/tariff with such a tariff invariably ends in tears."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Perhaps an energy monitor would help you identify how come you are currently using so much electricity?"Now to trolling as a concept. ....
