Cleaning lcd screens?

I've got an lcd tv, lcd monitor and laptop. All of which need cleaning. I don't know what I should use to clean them with as I know they are delicate.

I've seen on ebay and amazon lcd cleaning wipes, solution, special cloths etc. Is this really necessary?

It seems you can buy lcd's everywhere but nobody tells you what to clean them with or where to buy it.

I used to clean my crt's with kitchen roll and window cleaner, but don't really think I should do that on the lcd's lol.

I just really don't want to ruin them, but they need a clean.

Kitchen roll and window cleaner should be fine. Dont spray too much on and whipe gentle and dont press too hard.

Or go out to any decent diy, hardware, electronics shop and get some of the screen cleaner wipes.

I personally wouldn't use any chemical on an LCD screen, certainly not window cleaner!

They are not made of glass, but a flexible plastic, a strong chemical could serious damage the layer.

I use a soft, lint free cloth or lint-free tissues for dusting. Don't use paper towel as it may scratch.

Else, a small piece of slightly damp (water only) chamois leather, moved in a circular motion should remove any marks. Don't press too hard either!

Very diluted isopropyl alcohol is often suggested.

  • I use baby wipes - guy who fixed my busted pc gave me the tip. Nice and cheap and very soft, so won't scratch.
  • Thanks for the advice, I will take my pack of wet and dry back to wickes, I use a soft micro-fibre cloth I got for the car and some surgical spirit mixed with about a third water, does the trick.

Seriously is this ok for the monitor?

I've got some moist toilet tissues, wonder if they'd be as good lol? Not sure i'm brave enough to try it though.

    i've used baby wipes too.
not too much pressure and it's worked a treat the several times i've used them.

Of course it depends what you're trying to remove - if it's just general finger prints and normal markings the baby wipes are fine.
If it's something more stubborn, like pen ink then i think you'd need some sort of cleaning solution or alcohol. I've never used anything like that so can't recommend anything.

  • Baby wipes are perfectly ok, a lot of these screen wipes that they sell at £10 per hundred are little more than tissue impregnated with alcohol, which is of course what baby wipes are. Try and avoid heavily scented ones if you can, but they won't harm your screen if you do use them

You should keep the kids away from the screen lol

I don't have any kids of an age to poke pens at an LCD screen.
    :)

However, in my office it's a different matter - pointing at details on photos or drawings on the screen using a pen!!!!

  • You shouldn't use anything that is Alchol based as it takes the coating of the LCD screen

Most commercial LCD cleaners contain isopropyl alcohol, read: http://www.dvhardware.net/article15339.html

(Personally I only ever use water to clean LCDs.)
