Some terminals (I know Tesco's do) make a beeping sound when you need to insert your card for PIN entry.

Given the multiple banks involved, different networks, multiple machine manufacturers, dodgy phone connections and in some cases multiple jurisdictions, the real surprise to me is that it ever works at all!

Could also be a fault on the card.
Mine was declined for contactless, so the bank said try it with chip and pin, as you can only do so many contactless payments before needing to use the PIN again.
Still didn't work so they sent a replacement card.

Typically two short low-pitched beeps, together with a crystal clear message on the screen of the device in my experience. I've never known any till operator see this as a failure and cancel the transaction.
