If you haven't reset/wiped your iPhone it will hold your calls and message history from Day 1 you started using it. If you have reset/wiped it you might have it in an iCloud backup, you can use the iCloud MAC/PC client to check what backups are available in your iCloud.

I have never done a factory reset on my device and have tried the odd piece of software which has suggested there is some information on there from the time but I think due to the complexities within the ios system it's not been possible to get an accurate backup. Any advice? I'm thinking of going into an O2 or apple store to speak to one of their guru's as I think using a professional recovery company could be too expensive.

You don't need 3rd party software, unless you manually deleted your logs they are stored on the iPhone forever. If you manually deleted them, there is a chance you have copies in the iCloud backup which is enabled by default on iPhone.

If you have difficulties understanding how it works, by all means make an appointment in the genius bar and see if they can do something.

I don't see much value in going to O2 if they already told you they only keep 2 years worth of data

I may have cleared recent logs in the past not sure but never done a factory reset.

What is the Genius Bar is that on this site?
