SSD set in windows 10 to be optimised-is this right?

Options
Hi there folks,

I do know that an SSD shouldn't be defragged, but on my SSD's properties in tools it is set to be optimised, is this the same as being defragged, as I understand that Windows 10 does recognise an SSD and will set defrag not to run?

Another little question if I may, I noticed in taksmanager that a process called compatellrunner was fairly busy and a google search brought up that is a scheduled service that can be disabled, which I have done as it seems it is related to customer experience reporting back to Microsoft, thoughts on this if you are familiar with the above process?

Many thanks for any enlightenment on the above items.

:)

I don't think it is the same as de-fragged. You should be fine.

    Never heard of compatellrunner before.

If you're worried about privacy, you should go through all your settings with a fine toothed comb to make sure you aren't giving away any more info than you have to for windows to run. See here: https://pixelprivacy.com/resources/windows-privacy-settings/.

Not sure about the SSD, but if you've set it to only defrag when required, then it shouldn't ever need to if the system recognises the SSD.

compatellrunner is used by windows when it is planning on sending an update to your system.
It is used to check the compatibility of the intended update for your machine.

If you have feedback turned on then that also piggybacks on this to send info back to Microsoft.
If you turn it off, you should be fine, but any updates will be done blind, without Microsoft knowing if they are suitable for your hardware setup or not.

I would just leave it on if it were me, but obviously I would have already turned off all the feedback rubbish

Oh sorry, and as for your SSD question - windows will handle all that - just leave it to it.
  • Thanks for all replies and the advice, since compatellrunner may be useful for updates, just turned it back on again.

    Thanks again.
