I got a surprise today when a tradesman finished a job for several hundred pounds but didn't want paid there and then, said he'll email the invoice. I'm too used to tradesmen wanting their hands on the readies even before they have finished clearing up.

    You've got an honest face.

I had similar with a plumber who it turned out uses a service called Invoice2go so just invoiced online and took payment online like a grown up business. Obviously easier for him to keep track of...and they always know where you live!

I'd pay, and have paid, by bank transfer when I've had to, but no way would I hand over £2000.00 in cash.
I'd be a lot happier with a card payment though, as there's more protection for me, and surely the card fees are just another business expense for the company.
Also it amazes me how many small businesses and sole traders are happy to hand out their bank details to everyone, not much security there for them either.

Most sensible businesses print their bank details on every invoice they issue
This is because it is idiotic to make it hard for people to give you money
The risks are as close to zero as makes no difference
People have given away their bank details every time they have written a cheque for at least 300 years without issue

The only dilemma now is I had already drawn the money out, and if it's some sort of online invoice, he'll want paying by card or bank transfer so I'll have to deposit the money again. :rotfl:
TBH, I can't remember the last time a tradesman I've used wanted paying there and then, my plumber, roofer, alarm service etc have always posted an invoice to be paid.
