Out of interest (intended), what's the minimum payment the card will accept? For instance if it's £10 then a customer could pay that on credit card, still get full s75, and pay the rest by faster payments. And you'd only be 17p down.

I don't know without looking but I guess it would be in the region of £1. Anything less than that and the fee is effectively zero.

  • We did work in an office that involved re-routing a lot of internet cabling, needed them to test the PDQ machine and they put a payment of 1p through.

We do not take card payments, although part of the business does take Paypal. Most of our trade is B 2 B, they know out terms when they ask us to do the work. We are only a small business, we can't afford any more expenses than we already have.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

The minimum with my card reader is Stg £1 - that said I couldn't be bothered going through the hassle of that for a £1 payment.

Also it amazes me how many small businesses and sole traders are happy to hand out their bank details to everyone, not much security there for them either.

Write them a cheque. They will have your bank account details, name and address

As a customer I would be prepared to pay for the privilege of being able to pay a tenner on a CC and getting Section 75 protection, especially on a big purchases. I appreciate the rules have changed, such that credit card fees can't be passed on, but I would happily cover costs if that were an option.

I would pay it by bank transfer - getting out cash is a pain.
Oh, and pay on receiving invoice.

But it isn't an option. It's completely illegal.
  • Ask for a receipt for the cash part of it - you might not get one though. You do however have some record of the work being done because of the bank transfer.

I am sure it is not the case with your chaps, but I would imagine that some dodgy types might ask for cash so that the full fee doesn't go through their books and they can pay their team cash in hand. This does not mean that they are not going to do a proper job though.

Personally I would not worry about this, like I say, you have a record of the bank transfer and are probably getting a decent job as the reviews are good.

What do you think you can do with bank details, except pay them money?

  • I got a surprise today when a tradesman finished a job for several hundred pounds but didn't want paid there and then, said he'll email the invoice. I'm too used to tradesmen wanting their hands on the readies even before they have finished clearing up.

The only dilemma now is I had already drawn the money out, and if it's some sort of online invoice, he'll want paying by card or bank transfer so I'll have to deposit the money again. :rotfl:
