I'd use the machine if it's low value.
Using a person requires they make a decision and some responsibility. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Same thing has happened to me several times. Every time I have taken it to a cashier it is rejected - and everytime I put it in a machine - no problem at all.0

Computer said yes!
I had a cheque paid to my business that the person who gave it to me had picked up her sister's cheque book and drawn and signed the cheque by mistake. Rather than go to the bother of stopping and redrawing the cheque, we left it to see what happened. It went through the computer system rather than via a cashier, and cleared no problem at all. The lady then reimbursed her sister.Make £2025 in 2025

How long had it been since you banked the cheque?
Isn't there a difference between the funds being available in your account and the cheque actually being formally cleared through the issuing bank?
It's a lax system if they don't check the signature is that of the account holder!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -

Welcome to the real world! It would just be too expensive to check the signature on every cheque. So the banks adopt some approach - maybe checking over a certain amount, maybe at random, maybe not at all - and accept the hit for the occasional error.
I learned this many, many years ago, in the days when (by arrangement) cleared cheques were posted back with the monthly statement. (Does anyone else remember that?) I took over as treasurer at a church. The change of signature form was completed according to instructions and sent to the bank. When statements started coming to me rather than the old treasurer I began signing cheques myself.
Six months or more later I had a letter from the bank manager asking for a change of signature form to be completed as they had no record of any change. I wrote back and asked why the bank had been honouring cheques with my signature for at least six months - which I knew absolutely to be the case as I had all the returned (paid) cheques in my possession! I received a very apologetic phone call from the manager in which he accepted that signatures were not checked for all cheques. We still had to fill in a new change of signatures form, though!0 -
a couple of years ago I went to pay in a cheque made out to Jim... when the account stated James … I was told by the Jobsworth cashier that she would be "breaking the law " if she accepted it
As I had dozens of cheques paid in using that sobriquet in the previous year I asked her manager who I should report the bank to as a law abiding citizen to ensure they were prosecuted
The issue was immediately resolved, a note was added to my account and I have had no problems sinceTANSTAAFL !0 -
