PA1P and IHT400 submitted

Just an update. PA1P and IHT400 (+ associated schedules) all completed, signed, dated, photocopied and posted off to Probate and to HMRC (all 115 pages...). Both parcels tracked as received safely and receipt acknowledged by email from the Probate office.

Receipt indicated eight weeks to grant of probate unless there are questions about the IHT report. We've already paid about one third of the IHT due and will put the house on the market at the earlier of receipt of grant of probate or April 2020. The next instalment is due at the earlier of sale of the house or 28 February 2021, so we have a bit of breathing space for a while.

Now must acknowledge all the lovely cards and letters that were sent by friends and relatives.

Thanks everyone for all the help and advice given so selflessly.

Please take with a large pinch of salt - they all say that. We're 13 weeks and still no sign of probate. IHT was paid 2 months ago in full.

Everyone we speak to on HMRC helpline (Cardiff probate office is unobtainable on phone) has different ideas about how long our probate will be from Cardiff. Some say 12 weeks from receipt of application - others 12 weeks from payment of IHT.

Ridiculous that something reasonably simple takes this long, and leave many people in difficult situations.

    Good luck!

Well, well. Received an email from Manchester Probate Office that they're just awaiting receipt of the stamped IHT421 before issuing grant. Phoned HMRC and they've agreed to fast track the IHT421 to get it to me in the next week then I can send it on to Probate Office.

Still not holding our collective breath but this appears to signify some sort of progress when we really didn't think there would be any response at all until the new year at the very earliest (submitted 2 November 2019).

Unless something has changed since I executed my late sister’s estate last year, form IHT421 is sent electronically from HMRC to Probate Office.

In my case, delay was definitely with Probate Office rather than HMRC.

Thanks again, badger. Yes, I thought it was sent electronically to Probate, however when I spoke to HMRC they said that it would be sent to me for onforwarding. I'm not sure why!

I am sure that this has been written somewhere but I would be grateful for some advice. I have just submitted an online probate form for my late father. Do I now need to send the original death certificate to HMCT in Harlow (although I did submit a scanned copy with the online application) and the original will (plus 2 codicils)? Are there any other documents needed to be sent to Harlow?

Do the forms IHT400 and IHT401 (and schedules) get sent separately to HMRC at IBX9 1HT (again with another copy of the will and codicils) rather than to Harlow? Are there any other documents needed to be sent to HMRC? I am anxious to make sure there is no delay! With many thanks

  • Forwarded my IHT421 to Cardiff on 24/09/2019. No acknowledgement of receipt and no answer to subsequent emails or calls. Not holding my breath!

Do hope you receive Probate soon, Chris. We're going through Manchester Probate Office and they always seem very helpful on the phone and by email, but we'll have to wait to see how long the next step takes.
