Tesco - ATMs defunct

Options
For over a month the ATMs (4 of them) have been out of order at my local Tesco. I usually check balances & withdraw cash before I do my weekly shop. It's on a large retail centre but is the only place with ATMs. Therefore I have to go elsewhere in town (not walkable) to check/withdraw cash. I have complained to in-store staff and via their online complaints service but get no help - they just say they are 'awaiting engineers'! For four weeks?? Where are they coming from - Timbuktoo?
I am at a loss to know where to go, higher up the chain, in order to get someone to take responsibility instead of just blame-passing. I've shopped here for over 30 years because it is my closest supermarket but it is now becoming a joke! Any ideas how I can rattle cages & get some constructive help?

Many thanks for letting me rant!

Check balance on phone app. Use card to pay. You always spend too much with cash. Or indeed in store. Order online.

Tesco is not responsible for you checking your bank account balance. There are many ways you can do this. They are not your bank. ATM's are an additional service which is currently broken.

Sorry but it is incredibly easy to keep track of your spending, use a notebook if you need to track your balance. No body should be relying on an ATM balance check at Tesco.Use this opportunity to skill up.

Yeah, unfortunately you can't force them to fix the machines any quicker, so the best thing would be to remove your dependence on them. Download your bank's app to check your balance, and pay at the till with your debit card.

Just download your banks app or use telephone banking

Don’t know what you expect staff in store to do about it tbh

Don’t waste your time on something like this life is too short

If you're shopping at Tesco, if you want cash, it's fairly easy to get cashback.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Thanks for the advice - however I only have a cash card which I don't think I can use at a till in order to pay for goods or get cashback (correct me if I'm wrong!)

I'm afraid I'm an old dinosaur who prefers to actually see the cash in my purse!

    Technology wins yet again!

As to those who say I cannot expect the store to get the ATMs repaired - what sort of company drags its heels over at least trying to work out what's wrong with their equipment? If it was a freezer, till or petrol pump they'd be onto it sharpish, I'm sure!

Took my local store 7 weeks to fix a set of freezers so I wouldn’t hold your breath

  • OP - also, many of the ATMs installed at supermarkets are provided and managed by either an actual bank or some third-party provider, so it's likely that all Tesco can do is call up the contractor and log a service request.

It's then up to the contractor to sort it out, and they may want to have several jobs in one area before sending someone out.

If all 4 ATMs are managed by separate companies, then that's more of a mess.

I'd be surprised it's taking this long if they're all managed by well-known banks/building societies though, they're usually on the ball faster than 4 weeks...

It will be banks who own and operate these ATMs and, while it is in Tesco's own interest to facilitate these machines, in reality they have no influence. As such, it is pointless raising the issue with store staff or even Tesco head office.

Complain to the Bank which provides and operates the ATM.
