Is there technology between wifi and 4g any different in terms of safety?

Unless you have measured the EM radiation in your home you have no idea if the output of the dongle is higher/lower/about the same as the radiation from other sources. In any case putting it in next to you won't do any harm to you as the power levels will be too low to have any appreciable effect. The limits these sorts of devices have to adhere to are set on the cautious side and will be much lower than the levels that would be required to cause harm.
Don't worry about EM radiation from Wi-Fi/mobile phones/radio masts/TV masts/Bluetooth/etc.0 -
I was thinking, I am aware there is 'constant background radiation' from other people's wifi/cellphones etc. but I just don't want any more and/or in close proximity. So if I kept it at the same level it was always when I had a wire connection in my home whilst using 3/4g dongle for access to the internet then I would be happy.
So could I just create a tinfoil or similar material apparatus in the shape of something like a wizard's hat and thread the dongle (on a long lead away from my computer of course) through the tip of the cone and just angle it out of the window or otherwise faced away from me?
Would that work to still pick up the 3/4g signal without increasing emissions within the property?
Call me crazy but if it gives me peace of mind it isn't an expensive thing to do but would it be effective for its intended purpose?0 -

You can't be serious... your actually proposing making a tin foil wizards hat to protect you from radio waves :rotfl:
If you make two you can have one that you can wear when waking down the street to protect you when your outside aswell

As you have absolutely no idea what this background level is you will have absolutely no idea if having a 3G dongle nearby has an effect on the overall EM levels. In any case the EM levels will have absolutely no effect on you so it is not worth thinking about.user225688 wrote: »I was thinking, I am aware there is 'constant background radiation' from other people's wifi/cellphones etc. but I just don't want any more and/or in close proximity. You could do this but you would most likely ruin the signal. Do you know which way to point the foil cone? Do you know how to make it the correct shape to collect the signal and focus it at the dongle? Do you know the correct materials to make it out of? I bet you don't and learning about RF design is not that simple.user225688 wrote: »So could I just create a tinfoil or similar material apparatus in the shape of something like a wizard's hat and thread the dongle (on a long lead away from my computer of course) through the tip of the cone and just angle it out of the window or otherwise faced away from me?

You do realise that the maximum power Wi-Fi can be broadcast at is 100mW? That falls of with the inverse square law so it drops rapidly the further you move from the transmitter. The amount of sunlight (which is more energetic than the radio waves used for Wi-Fi and mobile phones) that reaches the earth's surface on a clear day can be as much as 1000W per square metre. You don't wrap yourself in foil to protect you from that do you? Why not? It irradiates you a lot more than Wi-Fi and is up to a 10,000 times stronger so any effects will happen much much more quickly.user225688 wrote: »Call me crazy but if it gives me peace of mind it isn't an expensive thing to do but would it be effective for its intended purpose?
What you propose is pointless, likely not to work, likely to ruin your internet connection, and therefore not worth bothering with. What would be useful is actually learning about the technologies involved, about EM radiation and how it can effect things so you will be more informed in the future and not be worried about it.0 -
In addition to the suggestions above.
If you're worried about having a EM emitter like WiFi or 3g near you when you're using the computer I have a really, really simple answer.
Go with ADSL or cable, disable the wireless on the router, and connect to the router using a network cable...
It amuses me that people worry about the effects of 3g and WiFi and come up with deliberate methods to try and reduce them, but won't just turn off the WiFi and go with a cable.
I guess there is an element of the perceived risk vs the effort of doing things the old fashioned way with cable
(I do sometimes wonder what the people who obsess over mobile phone signals and WiFi signals would make of the EM that used to be emitted by CRT's especially older ones from the 80s and earlier
