If you are quite close to London then that's the natural choice...if they want see countryside then the best way to do that would probably be by train.
Make sure whatever they book is done inadvance to get the best ticket prices but once you know the journey is by train then then they could go almost anywhere....north...how about Manchester or Leeds.
Costal then even a short trip to brighton
South west you have Bristol and Bath...in S 38 T 2 F 50
out S 36 T 9 F 24 FF 4

Skye by public transport , several trains to Kyle of lochalsh then buses to Skye which only run once or twice per day. Then getting about on Skye by buses that only run once or twice per day. Sounds like hell on earth, all during our wonderful winter period good luck. I live in Inverness btw0

Cardiff is a good idea. You can get to Cardiff from London on the megabus which is very cheap!
You can see the castles and culture in Cardiff city centre. You can also get a train/bus to the Brecon Beacons which is an area of outstanding beauty, theres lots of beautiful walks there.
We did Gorge Walking there last year, it was amazing!!
