Why was your partner making a fuss over the amount on the CC. ANY amount will do from 1p upwards. So long as there is proof of the balance of payment.Life in the slow lane0

I suspect there were two issues at play. Firstly, the £25 deposit paid weeks ago was paid by the father and he was not the one buying the car - so no S75 coverage would have attached to OP's partner, who was to be the owner
Secondly, although it wasn't that straightforward (for me) to pick this point out, the proposed £5 payment (requested more recently by the dealer) was going to be made after the rest of the price had been paid by bank transfer, and OP was concerned that, for the sake of that extra £5, the dealer would not bother contacting them to take it, but would be happy to take the hit on losing a fiver on the sale price. If that happened, OP's partner would not have used any of his own credit to buy the car and, again, would not get any S75 coverage.
Confused? You and me both! - but I think that's right.0 -

Please read again, he was not making a fuss, the dealer was. He wanted to pay £50 with his credit card, only to make sure that the dealer will definitely call him back once the card machine was working again. The dealer insisted on £5, which he is more likely to write off and not bother calling back, than £50. They finally agreed on £25.0 -

That's it in a nutshell, except his dad paid £300 on his credit card for the deposit, not £25.0 -

The fact that the card machine is not working could mean the business is in financial difficulty with the bank withdrawing the facility.
IMO Walk away until the machine is ''fixed''.
I'm a bit late to this thread, but am I missing something here.... the dealer doesn't want £50 put on the CC (the S75 threshold is £100??) but is happy to have £5 put on there?
I'd agree with other posters - that's not a duff credit card machine otherwise *any* CC payment would be refused.0 -

Just to clarify, the threshold for S75 qualification is not that the amount financed on your card must be over £100; it is that the purchase price of the item being financed must be between £100 and £30K. So, effectively, paying 1p on your credit card (not that you would) would be fine, as long as the purchase price is within the stated range.0 -
