They just don't want a CC payment as it brings the CC into play and if anything does go wrong the CC will chase the dealer for the whole amount.

The machine not working is an excuse.

You know this as a fact?

I disagree with the first part of the above response although I suspect the second part about the machine not working being an excuse may be true, but not for the reason implied.

OP mentions his not wanting to loose his deposit. How was the deposit paid?

The value of the car is under £30k, the card machine was working a few weeks ago as he was going to pay the deposit but his credit card pin wasn't working and so his dad paid it on his. They agreed to go half and pay £25 on his credit card when the machine is working again.

Sorry, I meant his credit card pin wasn't working when he tried to make a payment and so he had to get in touch with his cc company to get sent a new one
  • Sometimes you just need to say lol
  • It's quite a confused picture, isn't it.

Certainly, the suggestion that the dealer is motivated to avoid facilitating S75 protection (which, IMO, is a nonsense) cannot be true because OP's partner's father had already paid some on his credit card. What is very odd, however, is that when this payment was made (several weeks ago) OP's partner's father and OP's partner agreed to pay £25 each when the machine was working again - what? It was working or OP's partner's father wouldn't have been able to pay the deposit when he did.
  • So if the deposit was only £25 or even £50 - walk away until the machine is ''fixed''.

Is it just me that finds it strange that the dealer would risk losing the sale over this?

Obviously too late now but I'd probably call their bluff and walk away.

What happened by the way? Did he get the car?

Ok, just to clarify, as there seems to be some confusion. My partner and his dad viewed the car few weeks ago and his dad paid the deposit as my partner's credit card pin wasn't working. Skip to yesterday where he went back to pay the balance and collect the car. He wanted to pay a small amount by credit card to get s75 protection but they were having issues with their card machine. He was shown that the machine was having issues connecting so he at least knows that was genuine. He said he would pay £50 by CC when their machine was working again, they said no £5, cue lots of to and fro between him, the guy there and the boss who wasnt there and couldn't get hold of, waiting for the machine to come back on line. 4 hours later they compromised on half, £25. Still a risk that they wouldn't call him back, but at this point he was prepared to take the risk, he likes the car, and didnt want to lose his deposit. Not ideal but he had to make a choice. The dealer I feel was being a unreasonable over a mere £50 though considering he just paid a few grand over for the car
