I will shortly swapping vehicles with my daughter, will do this online.
1. You tax your new vehicle using the new keeper supplement.
2. Your Daughter taxes the new vehicle using the new keeper supplement.
3. You change keeper of your vehicle to your Daughter.
4. Your Daughter change's the keeper of her vehicle to yourself.0 -
Not if they transfer registered keeper on the last day of the month then tax the car from the 1st.
I think not. Unless you can convince them that the RKs were changed on the stroke of midnight. A car has to be either taxed or SORN 365 days a year. Upon the change of RK the tax is immediately cancelled. If this is done on the last day of the month then it is no longer taxed for the remainder of that day. The new keeper will have to tax it from the first day of that month and the old keeper will not get a refund for that month.
An alternative might be for the car to be declared SORN before the change of keeper is registered (provided there is somewhere to keep it off road) and for the new keeper to un-SORN it and tax it from the first of the month. Then only the old keeper will lose a month's tax.0 -
I think you might be missing his point...
If the cars are simply being swapped over between family members, why even bother changing RK? Just change the insurance.
Only going on the OP,
'Do I need to tax the new vehicle before changing ownership(also online) or do I change ownership first?'
Seems like he wants to change ownership, doesn't ask does he have to or want advice on this, just a question about which order to do it all in.
Maybe I did miss the point but it sounded like a usual MSE type statement regarding RK and owner - ok we all (most) know they are not one and the same.
It a bit like when people call it car tax and someone says there is no such thing as car tax its VED. All correct of course but doest really answer any questions or add to the thread.

Because there is a slim chance that not doing so could possibly lead to problems with their insurance companies.
One question asked when taking out a policy isIs XXXXX XXXXX the registered keeper?
I know that answering no is fine but there is then a possibility that the insurers may think that fronting is going on.
Also, in the event of a loss on the vehicle, any payment made may be to the RK and not the owner.
It only takes a minute or two to swop over details online so why not do so?0
