Excise duty and changing ownership
I will shortly swapping vehicles with my daughter, will do this online. Do I need to tax the new vehicle before changing ownership(also online) or do I change ownership first? I know I can’t drive the new vehicle before it’s taxed, but can I tax it before it’s in my ownership? Many thanks.

You tax it with the new keeper slip reference after the change of keeper. If you do the change of keeper online you get the new v5 in a few days.0

They can change registered keepers, which doesn’t mean ownership, but is there any point?0 -
You will each pay twice for a month's duty. The tax is cancelled upon a change of registered keeper (RK). Only full unexpired months are refunded and duty must be paid from the 1st of the month. If you change RKs on the 5th of November you will both receive unexpired duty from the 1st December but both cars will have to be taxed from 1st November meaning you will both pay for November twice.0

Changing the registered keeper immediately cancels any tax left on it. The last keeper gets a refund for unused (whole) months. Then the new keeper must tax it.
So renewing the tax and then changing the keeper just results in a big refund to the old keeper. And an un-taxed vehicle. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

If the cars are simply being swapped over between family members, why even bother changing RK? Just change the insurance.0 -
Best to change over don’t want any speeding fines risked.0
