Sixt CPH - Terrifying reviews

Hello,
3 days ago I booked 3 day car hire from Sixt in Copenhagen Airport for November 10th, through Argus Car Hire for a very reasonable sum of £58. The Argus Car hire site displays the ratings of companies, and Sixt was rated highly so I booked feeling confident.
I have (foolishly) only just checked the reviews for that particular branch and it has made me quite worried.
The last 20 reviews on Trust Pilot are all 1 star, with almost all the customers describing how they had been unfairly charged with damage costs which they had not caused, and were too small to see with the naked eye so therefore couldn't have spotted them on pick-up, or some similar difficulty.
This is clearly a problem with this specific branch, but the 48-hour free-cancellation period has expired and I've paid £40 so I am not sure what to do.
I'd like some advice on whether I should write off the £40 and find a more reputable company in the area, or if there are techniques to ensure I can't be stung by unfair claims?
Cheers

Take careful photographs both when collecting and when returning the car.
Consider annual car hire insurance if appropriate.0 -
Get excess insurance and don't take any crap from them when they hard sell.
With car hire, it's all about not being the person who pays the proper rate for hiring the car.0 -
Thanks, might as well mention that this will be the first time I've hired a car!0

Keep in mind most people only write reviews when something goes wrong. Check out reviews for some well known companies, you may be surprised...0

It seems to be the same with every car hire company in Europe , although we have never had a problem . We always take out an excess policy in this country , they dont cost much . They will ghost quite a large sum against your credit card , you can pay less if you buy their more expensive excess policy
Check over the car , point out any damage you see
As I said we have never had a problem and we hire cars in Europe quite a lot ,Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0
