Considering having it made from scratch and I want the stones to be certified (IGI/HRD/GIA) or equivalent.
Many thanks!

Getting your ring made to your own design is definately a good option. My husband took me to a small but very well regarded jewellers and jewellery makers , we explained exactly what we wanted, they got in a selection of diamonds for us to choose from and we chose our favourite. They then made the ring to our design using the diamond we had selected. It was very special for us and made it all the more personal and unique. Also it cost a fraction of the cost that the high street would have charged. Most recent wins: IPad, Jamie Magazine yearbook, Links of London friendship bracelet, Baumatic ice cream machine! :j0

What about this, it worked for a friend of mine.
Buy a Diamond Ring Keyring such as this one :- http://www.jjjewellery.com/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=37 Then on bended knee propose to your love and offer this token which comes in an engagement ring box. Then you both choose the real engagement ring together, and she also gets to keep the keyring as a romantic reminder for ever. Ahhh, happy ever after.!!0 -
there was a thread somewhere on here a while back where someone who knew a lot about it wrote the most comprehensive information on choosing diamonds.... i can't remember which board it was on but i'll try and find it - it was fantastic!:happyhear0

If your talking about Birmingham, I can recommend Newey's (on the main street). I had my platinum and princess cut diamond engagement ring from there as well as many other white gold/ platinum and diamond jewellery. They have a really good selection as well as excellent customer service. Ask them to clean your other jewellery as a freebie if you buy from there. Also ask them to include an insurance valuation.
Hope that helps as there are a lot of shops to choose from.0 -
Xbox, can I echo a sentiment expressed here earlier:
The day is important. If you have a ring in mind, does it matter if you save or spend £100 or so more or less. Do not buy online, but make the day - a day to remember.
A romantic champagne breakfast, taxi or limo into the City (or wherever) light shopping followed by a nice lunch. Maybe a bit of a walk, just the two of you, and then capped by a dinner and night a nice hotel. Buying the ring is great fun, but the anticipation of her receiving it, is immense. Set the scene, and then pull out all the stops.
Make it a day to remember. My 7 year old is always asking about 'details'. It IS the detail that matters. Good luck and congratulations.0
