Help - used car failed MOT

Twice this has been asked. Certain places have a habit of finding work that doesn't need doing. If only we knew if it was one of those.
I'm, not referring to ultra retail places like Kwik Fit and ATS or similar. My servicing is done by main dealer has been with both the cars I have had and they always give me % of wear at service time.0 -

It's still useful to know nonetheless. If it was a Kwik Fit type outfit it would also explain a lot.0 -
If the car has been left standing for a while, the steel discs will rust and the longer it stands the more rust there is.
When it is driven the pads are pressed onto a heavily rusted surface, which seriously shortens the life of the pads.
It seems beyond the capability of manufacturers to source a grade of Stainless Steel that dissipates heat to overcome the problem, but then again, discs & pads are consumables and a regular source of income0 -
Brake discs as well as pads are a standard consumable. Depending on driving style and type of conditions driven in its perfectly reasonable that they might need changing one year, without even appearing as an advisory the year before.
And its brakes, not breaks.0 -

Cheap MoT = fail in my experience. They get the money back somehow. If you'd had a full price MoT somewhere else it may well have passed or only failed on pads.
Anyway the dealer will most likely say you had no need to get it MoT'd as it came with an MoT so not paying and I'd agree with them.0 -
If the lining of your brake pads is left neglected it will cause damage to the brake discs. The metal from the pads will score the metal on the discs, which will cause them to become weak, and in need of replacement. If you are experiencing a juddering when you brake it is important to get this looked at by a vehicle technician who can professionally diagnose and fix the problem to ensure safety for you.0

Ask for the old disc's to be returned when you drop the car off, you never know they might suddenly find they don't need doing.
If they still do you might find an imaginative use for part worn disc's.
It's a bit of a pros and cons situation but you can reduce disc wear with organic pads, depends on your driving style. Good for motorcycles though.0 -
It does scream Kwik Fitt.0
