Help - used car failed MOT
I Wondered if any of you could please give me some advice.
On the 24th of October (5 days ago), I bought a used car in perfect cosmetic condition. The car, a Mazda 3, was three years and eight months old (reg in Feb 16) and had a four month MOT.
When I bought the car I was aware the car needed a service and factored this into the price.
I arranged a service for today and as the extra cost was only £29, arranged for it to have a new MOT.
The car has failed it MOT as it needs new break discs and pads. I have done 11 miles in the car since I bought it. I was aware it probably needed new pads but was unaware of the discs.
Do I have any recourse against the dealer who made no mention of this issue, or do I have to swallow the cost as I guess these are wear and tear issues.
No other issues were found and the car remains in good condition other than the issue mentioned.

How long was the MOT on the car when you bought it ?
Where did you take it for this MOT? Does it really need new brake discs?0 -
At the last MOT, the pads were an advisory. The last MOT was in Feb 2019.
Happy to pay for the pads but can I hope/expect the dealer to stump up for any of this?0 -
Where did you take it for servicing? Many servicing centres will tell you what levels your brake discs and pads are at.0

I doubt it - you won't be entitled to it. Why did you not do a MOT check before buying the car and make a new MOT part of the deal?0 -
Rear discs cant be more than £50 for a pair - just pay for new ones if they need them, they probably dont though.0

....depends on the dealers attitude I guess, but the fact that they did not put 12 months ticket on it prior to sale (normal practice when selling a 2nd hand car), or even serviced it suggests they are not a very good dealer so I would not hold your breath....next time insist on 12 months MOT and service before parting with your readies...0

I think that given the MOT was in February and you bought the car knowing there were only four months left on the MOT certificate, the dealer has no responsibility. I think it is wear and tear. If it's a good car you're going to own for a while, I'd just get the work done, knowing that the new discs and pads will last a long time.0

Unless the seller stated that it had just had new brakes, you have zero reason to complain to them.
The last MOT was 8 months ago, and the disks were OK then.
Clearly it's been driven since then, and worn the brakes.
Pay up.0 -
I’ll pay up. Just feels wrong to be sold a car which immediately fails an MOT.
Although, like one or the sellers said I should’ve asked for a new MOT at the point of sale. I didn’t as the car was only just out of its warranty.0 -

Twice this has been asked. Certain places have a habit of finding work that doesn't need doing. If only we knew if it was one of those.0
