Should I get it fixed before trading in?

I have an 09 reg Hyundai i20 with 75,000 miles on the clock which I'm looking to part ex for something a bit newer and more fun. Similar cars are selling for between £1.5k and £2k on autotrader. The problem is that the lower gears have recently been starting to get less reliable to change into. It can be like just a bit clunky or sometimes like you're crunching the gears even though you have the clutch fully depressed. I've not had it looked at but I suspect it'd need a new gear box.

My question is how would this affect the trade in value (other than badly)? According to this page https://www.whocanfixmycar.com/blog/much-gearbox-repairs-cost/ it should run me somewhere around £380 to get fixed myself. How much could I expect to get knocked off it for this? Would it be worth doing before trading in?

At that age of car, i personally wouldnt.

I'd let them test drive it if they want as part of their valuation process but the reality is they'll be trading it on through auction.

Telling them about it will give them the opportunity to knock £400+ off the value when they've no intentions of doing the work anyway.

Don't know but it had a new clutch a few years ago.

Interesting, it's not a consistent problem yet but it would get noticed during a test drive. If the amount they knock off is similar to the cost of the fix I might as well not inconvenience myself.

And they may not notice it. They may not even drive it.

I doubt they'd knock £400 off anyway. If they mention it i'd say "yes i've noticed that sometimes its notchy".

Just because similar cars are being listed at a certain price on Autotrader is no guide as to what a dealer will offer on a trade-in.

Older cars are just a hassle to dealers, they have to pay to send them to auction.

The dealer offered me £50 for my 2007 71000 mile Chevrolet Kalos with FSH. (Not the finest car I know, but a reliable 5 door hatchback) I sold it privately for £300, online dealers are selling them for £600-900.

You can send a vehicle to auction yourself, fee is about £30 plus 10% commission on the sale price.

Why go to that hassle when a dealer will most likely be offering auction price anyway?

The dealer must be offering some fudge factor below auction price to avoid being out of money though?
