This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning everyone.

It's a chilly start. Must get used to this now that the clocks have changed.

I enjoyed a quiet afternoon yesterday when DM had her visitor. He stayed until about 7pm when she went back to bed. And they really enjoyed the wee bite size cream cakes I bought from Marks, I'll buy them again.

My time was spent whizzing through three episodes of Midsomer Murder (new ones with Neil Dudgeon) and three episodes of QI. Such a lazy gal!

For now I'm still snug under my duvet. When I went to the bathroom earlier I could hear DM quietly 'snuffling', as she calls it. My term is nearer to 'snoring'.

My thoughts are with those of us struggling. And I wish everyone a happy Sunday.
• Good morning and thanks Gers.
It's fine and dry here after all that rain.

Yesterday was an ok sort of day, did a tiny bit of shopping, and the usual stuff round the house.

Today, I need to go to a Tho*rntons, I think there's one in Durham. An elderly friend asked ne to buy some sweets there for her, as a gift to someone. Also Dh wants to go to the caravan to blow out any water left in the system, he has a gadget that forces the water out, Got to do it before it freezes and damages things.

I might get some washing out as well, even if it half dries it's something, I can finish it off inside.

I want to sort dried fruit as well, work out how much I need for the Christmas cake and two smallish puddings, and I thought I'd do some mincemeat this year as well.

That will be it for today really, Hope everyone has a good Sunday.

Take care folks

Morning :hello:

I went to a lovely memorial service yesterday. It was for a family friend - mr tru's family, but of course over the years I got to know her family too. There was no funeral, I'm paraphrasing here but she said something along the lines of “the last thing people want to do when someone dies is start organising these things, and I find them rather dreary!” and insisted on a direct cremation. There were lots of funny stories and some sad moments, and a collection for her favourite charity which she'd been involved in since the day it was set up. She loved her garden so her husband put a basket of daffodil bulbs near the door and told everyone to help themselves to one on the way out. There were a lot of people there and it was obvious there weren't enough bulbs for everyone so I made sure I got one straight away. I need to find a nice pot for it, if I can't find the right one in the garden then I'll buy one.
RIP lovely lady x

I got very wet though! I had planned to walk to the church (about 20 minutes, 35 minutes if my leg was having a limpy day, lol) but it was very wet and windy so I caught the bus. The buses were hit and miss, I found out later that a bit further along the route had some flooding, not sure how bad it was exactly but it was enough to cause a row of local shops to close, one of them had flooded. I wrapped up well and had an umbrella but still got soaked. I had to cross the road when I got off the bus, I go down this road all the time and never noticed that it slopes so much. I couldn't step off the path without stepping in a wide puddle – I tried walking up and down the path a bit to find a better place to cross but couldn't find one :D Then had the same problem on the other side. The road has a quite a peak in the middle, I'm sure it was modelled on a mountain, lol. Next time I'll be booking a taxi :D

I'm looking forward to a cosy day today, the rain has stopped and it's very still at the moment, it's also very cold. Everything is very soggy and muddy outside so I'll take Scamp out then have a hot shower when I get back. I have a few bits of housework to do but not much, I plan to be glued to the sofa for the afternoon :D

• Morning folks and thanks GERS. It felt super chilly when I got out of bed so the heating went straight on till the house warms up. Sun is forecast all day, which will be lovely to see after yesterday's torrential rain.

I waded through my present stash yesterday and cursed myself for not keeping my list up to date. I seem to have doubled up for one person with nothing for another! I juggled stuff around but am still left with "spares" and lots more to buy. The "spares" will come in for birthdays next year!

I got a lovely smoked gammon joint from Sainsbobs this week so I am doing that for lunch. There will be lots left to feed me for the next few days and the remains will be sliced and frozen. I still have an abundance of carrots, despite using half a dozen in the squash and carrot soup yesterday, so I think I will do some carrot and swede mash for a change.

Have a good day folks and ((HUGS)) for the poorlies or sad. Take care all xx ps GERS those little cakes sound delicious I must look out for those when I go on my next bus trip to M & S,

Morning All

Well the extra hour did nothing for my sleep pattern, awake at 5.30! I tried to go back to sleep but it didn't work.

I have soup on the go, it's that kind of weather now, and the carrots needed using up. Eggs for breakfast but need to go shopping later as there's very little in the fridge.

DD and I had a lovely walk yesterday along the canal, Sophie slept through it all despite me pointing out the lovely colours of the leaves and the ducks in the water! DD seemed a bit brighter, she has found a little mums and toddlers group nearby so will give that a go on Thursday.

Glad your DM enjoyed the little cream cakes Gers, I've seen them in M&S and they look very tempting - if only I liked cream!
Sounds like a lovely celebration of your friends life tru, shame you got so wet.

Hugs to those facing a struggle, have a happy Sunday. Take care. XX

We've had so much rain that parts of the marina are under water still the did 's are enjoying the puddles.

Roast beef for dinner today I may make myself a small pan of soup, Steve will only eat knorr packet soup and I find it difficult to make just enough for me.

Have a good day everyone.

Morning Everyone,

Cold but lovely and Sunny. Washing nearly done - so will go out on the line soon.
Very pleased with the way the Christmas Cake has turned - got to feed it with alcohol every two weeks, until I ice it.

Nelski The recipe was the James Martin Christmas Cake recipe. Very easy to follow and not a huge amount of ingredients to buy.

I must also lag my outside tap for the Winter - I wrap old clothing around it .

Have a nice Sunday everyone.

Morning :)

Thank you I love comps thats the chosen one :) Partly because I hero worship my James and partly because its "proper" yorkshire recipe so will be just like mums with any luck. When we we were kids mum used to make 3 cakes...one for Christmas one for my birthday and a taster cake to make sure it had been fed enough :D She also never iced it and we would have with slabs of cheese. I used to feel deprived when everyone else had icing but now that cheese is my preferred choice now with maybe a small port

Good day yesterday managed to tidy a messy kitchen and make a luscious steak and mushroom pie with mash cabbage and leeks. One for the freezer too so that wont last long.

Out for lunch today with a friend so no cooking for me and we are going by cab to enable some vino to be enjoyed. Hard to avoid places stuffed with kids on Sunday but hopefully our choice will be the right one.

Enjoy your day with its extra hour :A

Morning all

It rained for most of the day yesterday but seems brighter today and its meant to be dry all day, I have stripped the beds and got them on a hot wash.

I have asked OH if he can cut the plum tree back today it needs a good trim and seems to enjoy having a haircut, it gives me more fruit the following year if it has a trim.

Roast pork for dinner and will do extra for dinner tomorrow too so a nice easy meal for then.

I need to message my boss and ask her if I can wear sandals into work tomorrow not ideal in a kitchen but they are the only things that are comfortable on my foot, I need to keep some sick time for when I (hopefully ) have the steroid injection into my foot as you have to have time off after that.

Will rest my foot again this afternoon and maybe watch a film while dinner is cooking.

Have good days all xx
• Good morning chums ,just done my menu for the week and no shopping needed at all this week :)
Slowly working my way through the freezer stocks, I swear it multiplies in there when I'm not looking .The trouble is I loathe binning anything if I can help it, so anything edible gets frozen if not used :) so really I am my own worst enemy

I have made a nice apple pie though with a couple of large cooking apples I was given, so that will go with me to DDs this afternoon for pudding for tonight's dinner, also a plate of jam tarts made with left over pastry.(I actually used up the left over pastry bits from my freezer as well when making the pie :) so win-win.

My delicious green tomato chutney that I found at the back of the cupboard my sis-in-law had given me months ago and I only found a little while ago has also been finished up it was gorgeous I have a feeling it was nicer as it had 'matured' :)I washed out the jar and that along with a couple of others I will give to her when I see her next .I daresay she will have made some more this autumn so I will get a pot in exchange for my empties.I think I will store it away for next spring to 'mature' again :)

I have given a couple of my storage cupboards a good sort out yesterday and found all sorts of forgotten goodies .Not being very tall, 5.3" things then to get put away on higher shelves and forgotten, but its like a nice surprise when you rediscover them I have three double cupboards just for food and tinned stuff in my kitchen and thats apart from a long shelf that has stuff stored on it as well :)

I think there will be some mince tarts being made over the coming weeks as I seem to have several pots of Christmas mincemeat I bought reduced in January and as they haven't been opened I shall be making a tart or two or maybe those mincemeat slices as I like those. The pasty is really more of a shortbread than pasty in the slices and having sorted out some surplus spices they too will get used up.
My two DD's say I am like a squirrel with my food storage :) they are probably right .I think its possibly the result of growing up with rationing and a bad patch of poverty during the 1970s with a high mortgage rate thats made me a bit of a 'just in case' buyer I daresay there are a few of us on here like that :)

But its a great time of the year with Christmas on the horizon the try and empty the cupboards a bit to make room for the left over Christmas bargains :) (hopefully )

Tru the service sounds really a nice way to remember someone along with the daffodil bulb, what a lovely idea,
Wellt the sun is shining and I must get a wriggle on, sitting room need a vacuum and dust before lunch. I also want to pot a vat of HM celery soup on as I have a head of celery to use up from the fridge It will make enough for at least four days lunch this week I always like soup and crackers for lunchtime so this weeks will definitely be celery with probably a handful of lentils and a good shake of sweet chilli sauce to liven it up a bit
<<hugs>> to those who are not feeling so good, almost another month has vanished, don't know where the time flies to

Have a good day chums whatever you are doing

Cheers JackieO xx
