Amazon now charge at order, or at least reserve it, nowadays.

I'm not sure why they changed things, they used to charge when they prepared the order, but it is what it is I guess.

Maybe it's just you? Ordered £400 of gear, not changed till delivery today.

Now yes one item is taking longer and I expect will already be charged, but if that is the case and you don't want charging the answer is make seperate orders!

I shall go check that shortly I was not even authorised until dispatch, and if an autherisation is causing anyone problems they really should not be buying.

Contradicted on the Amazon website here:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201455290
"If you place an order which will be paid by a payment card, we won't charge the card until the order enters the dispatch process."

That's what they say, I'm not sure it's what they do :-

In September, I ordered some items from Amazon (themselves, not marketplace/3rd Party), which were "Temporarily Out Of Stock" at the point of order, with more coming "soon". It definitely said we will not charge your card until dispatch.

Got fed up of waiting for stock to come in, and with no ETA shown, I cancelled the order on 4th October (still showing no stock), and ordered a different item from another supplier.

My credit card statement shows that after acknowledging the cancellation, they billed (not pre-authorised/ringfenced, billed!) the full amount for the cancelled order, and then next day, refunded it.

Seems an odd way to do it.

I wonder if there is some confusion here. Amazon ALWAYS authorise the payment on order being placed. Which on my last order (yesterday) is the full amount, unlike the usual £1.00. But as I have Prime it may make a difference.
The amount will not actually debit my account till after the goods have arrived.

Given the OP has not come back and confirmed if direct from Amazon or Marketplace. We are all guessing.
Could well be that OP available funds were down the amount and it will not fully debit till goods have been dispatched.

Mine wasn't an authorisation it was actually taken off my credit card , a monitor that was awaiting stock to come in

Have a go with this item, its out of stock, only 22p so see if it comes off straight away

My experience was that they didn't used to do that, they waited until at least the point that they were preparing it for dispatch, which could take hours to days.

More recently that has changed to where the payment is at least authorised almost immediately, which is in line with other retailers in my experience.

Apologies, but with such a contradictory set of replies I was just going to leave it.

The order is direct from Amazon.
The agent I chatted with claimed it should not have happened (but unlike deanos, I wasn't offered any compensation for fees I'll incur)
My order page still has Invoice not available
even though that first part is clearly wrong from some of the replies here.
  • They now take payment on order, not on dispatch.
I've had numerous items charged to my amex that I've still yet to receive.
Probably illegal as it breaches their stated terms and conditions.

They're authorisation holds, not charges so they don't breach any terms and conditions.

I had the exact same thing with amazon and hard drive yesterday. Only thing is, they then cancelled the order. After speaking with them, they said that I would expect a refund within 5-7 days. They said that they haven't taken the money just ringfenced it (but the money has been taken out of my account). The thing is, they said because they have informed me about it, they can refund but I was the one querying with them. They hadn't actually sent me any information about a refund.
