At 70mph, 24 car lengths should be left, allowing time / distance for an emergency stop to 0mph.

Thats the overall stopping distance, not the distance you need to leave between cars because the car in front isn't going to just stop dead - it will also have a stopping distance.

At 70mph, thats 31 metres per second (about 100ft/7 car lengths per second).

The overall stopping distance you're quoting is 96mph - about 3 seconds. So 2 seconds is plenty to cover thinking distance as well as have a very generous buffer for variables like mass, brake condition etc between you and the vehicle in front.

    It's not a target speed, it's a limit.

People should also show consideration to other road users. They should be aiming to drive at the speed limit for their vehicle if it is safe to do so and driving more slowly would impede other road users. And they should be keeping left.

Quite common to pass drivers doing 60 in lane two when lane 1 is empty. It's frustrating. You either overtake on the wrong side or have to move from lane 1 to lane 3 and back.

It’s important to make progress though, going significantly lower back hand the speed limit when there’s no reason to is not good driving.

It's roughly 2 seconds in the dry, 4 in the wet & at least 10 on snow or ice.
Wonderful how few drivers bother with that though & just cut into your carefully placed space.

Just keep dropping back. It is not fun, but it increases your odds of making old bones.

It may not be an offence to undertake but if the vehicle your undertaking decides to pull back in to lane 1 you could then be held to blame if there's a collision.

Hogging lane 2 is for amateurs!

On the new 4-lane "smart" M6 the true experts have taken to hogging lane 3.

All the money, delays and arguably lives lost have been totally wasted as in effect it's still only a 2 lane carriageway.
