Returning online purchase from China

I bought Christmas 'wrapping' bags seen on a Facebook ad, via Paypal. I chose the designs I wanted and the quantity of each. Bags arrived that were not the designs I chose, nor remotely Christmas themed, and didn't have the tags as advertised. I have no use for them. I went through the Resolution Centre at PayPal who decided in my favour and I will get a refund - however, the condition of this is that I have to pay the return postage - tracked - which has cost me £18.45. It seems immoral that I have to pay to return goods that I didn't order. Is this legal? My husband bought a shirt from China and had an identical issue - it wasn't the design he'd ordered and was offered a refund as long as he returned the shirt that they sent - which would have cost twice the price of the shirt. This just seems immoral - why do we have to pay to return goods that simply aren't what we ordered or wanted? Lesson learnt but a real shame for legit and good businesses who also advertise in social media channels and will miss out - we had no idea these were Chinese companies until we found we were waiting 3+ weeks for delivery. Thanks

"When buyers pay with PayPal on any website, PayPal Buyer Protection covers them in case there is a problem. If an item doesn’t arrive or is significantly not as described, we will help buyers get a full refund."
"If your transaction qualifies for PayPal Buyer Protection you are covered for the full purchase price plus the original shipping charges."

When you buy from China you give up your consumer rights because you have none.
It's the gamble you take, Paypal will give you the refund but as you now know it also comes at a price.
Have you paid the import charge yet? that may also come so don't be surprised when it does.
You say it's immoral to have to return them, so you want a refund and the goods? They should pay return postage I agree but making them is a different matter.0 -

I don't think many round here will be up on Chinese law.0 -

Where does it say that?daviddododo wrote: »

You even quoted it but seem to have misread it.
OP
Sign up to Paypal's RETURNS ON US and see if you can at least gain a small reimbursement (£15) towards sending it back tracked to the seller. Then live in hope it actually tracks.0 -
Thanks for explaining. Wish it was clearer where sellers are based - I thought this company was USA. And just fyi, I didn't want to keep the goods and happy to return them to the seller. But given they weren't what I ordered in the first place, feel mighty annoyed at having to pay to return them! I have done so out of principle - I'm sure they just send customers any product that might loosely be described as what was ordered (like hubbys shirt) and rely on the fact most won't be bothered to return them and insist on a refund.0

You would still have to pay to return them to the USA, so what's the difference?0 -
For goodness' sake. How many people get sucked into this sort of nonsense, chasing what they think is a bargain? You'd think twice about buying stuff from me if I sold it in unbranded boxes that I wouldn't let you open, from the back of a van. This is no different.
Stop buying cheap stuff from overseas that's advertised on Facebook. It's not as if this country isn't full of shops and legitimate online retailers.0 -
Why would that have made things any better? You'd still be arguing with someone in a foreign jurisdiction.NewLook2011 wrote: »I thought this company was USA.0 -

So according to Paypal the seller should pay return shipping costs...
If you’re going to quote something at least read it properly. Where does it say what you have told us it says?0
