What we in the UK refer to as the parking brake or hand brake is often called the emergency brake in the USA and although this term is gradually going away, it is still used by a lot of people.
It's been labelled as "parking brake" on every vehicle I've rented over there.0 -

Autos have an extra wide brake pedal, you'd have to be seriously determined to press the accelerator with your left foot, but left foot braking is fine. I've done it for 40 years, and I drive manuals as well.
I used to hold it on the brake with my left foot and then stamp down with the right foot whilst lifting up the left, but since I had a Vectra, with this annoying habit of dropping into neutral when you kept your foot on the brake*, I just hold it on the handbrake nowadays.
Also it is a bit annoying seeing the lit up grimacing red face of the driver behind staring into my high level dazzle lights with these "modern days" cars, so I stopped holding it on the pedal out of consideration for them
The only problem I have switching to manual is expecting it to change gear when the engine starts labouring and it doesn't
*The plan was, I think, that it dropped smoothly back into gear whilst you moved your foot, but with the "stamp down, lift up" technique it used to go in with a massive CLANG, which sounded as if it might be expensive long term....:DI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Which is why I stated that the term is gradually changing.
That doesn't detract from the fact that many people still use "emergency brake" when referring to the parking brake.
Just type the term into Google and you will find that it is still a very commonly used term in the USA.

@car54 - it appears you are/were a driving instructor. Are you not shocked that someone has gone through lessons and passed their test, but can't to a hill start? Surely this is still a hage part of the learning process, auto or manual?
The OP almost crashed into a car and assumed the issue was that the car behind didn't leave enough space for them to roll back. Incredible. They've had to come onto an internet forum to learn how to use their HANDBRAKE.
I see SO MUCH bad driving. Middle lane hogging, speeding, holding their phone etc. Has the system just totally broken down?0 -
It does worry me a little that a) someone has not been taught how to do a hillstart and can get through a test and b) that an instructor training in a full automatic didn't explain to the learner that not every car will be the same. Reminds me of the stories of young folks learning in a modern car with lots of driver aids and then buying an older, cheaper model without them and not being able to cope. Me - I learnt the old school way so that when I did buy a car with Hill Start Assist - it actually hindered me until I got the hang of it!I need to think of something new here...0

Finally, it's not a huge part of the process. I found most people grasped the technique pretty quickly. It was much more difficult getting them actually to notice the inclines in the first place.0 -
If the car is held on the clutch very often you will be very soon be paying for a new clutch, this will focus your mind on hand brake use during a hill start (£795 from a Toyota dealer)?8Deepest Kent. 4.6kW Growatt inverter, solar i boost+ 5.9kW Solar Edge
