Car rolling back

Hello
I am new driver and I've got Toyota Auris reg 07 semi automatic.
I've got a problem with the car as it rolls back when I drive uphill. I almost had an accident couple weeks ago as I had to stop uphill due to traffic lights and when I started driving again it rolled back. The guy behind me stopped very closely and I almost crushed into him.
Is it me doing something wrong or the other guy not keeping a safe distance? Can I do anything differently to avoid similar issues in the future?

I always thought you learned to use the handbrake when setting off up a hill? My driving test had this!
Some auto boxes have a system which prevents rolling back but others, like the Auris do not so treat it like a manual on hills and use the handbrake.0 -
Sorry I wasnt clear. The issue is not when I am stationary but when I take my foot off the break and press gas pedal. The car rolls back before it starts driving forward.0

Why dont you have the handbrake on? Then you wont roll anywhere.0

The problem is between the slight time of moving your leg from the brake, to the gas pedal, the car will move back due to gravity.
If you use the handbrake, you apply the gas slightly (not too much but a little as to feel the car trying to move forward) before releasing the handbrake and move forward. This will prevent it rolling back.0 -

If this is serious and not a wind up, please call a driving instructor (not the one who taught you before your test) book a few lessons and tell them you need to work on hill starts.0 -
What is a "break" pedal and "gas" pedal? I thought it was a brake and accelerator pedal? Maybe the OP needs to speak to their instructor about learning hill starts?Signature on holiday for two weeks0

Is a "hill start" not part of the test these days?
They were a staple of my lessons, resulting in stalls, pleasant clutch smells and lots of 'kangaroo juice'.
How can the OP be even asking what is wrong with their technique?0 -

Obviously they don't, if not there won't be any need for this post.
It is possible the OP learnt to drive in an automatic car that won't roll backward after stopping or one of the newer cars with hill start assist. A good learning instructor should have pointed this out still.0
